President Bush: "I'm not paying attention to politics." Story Tools
RELATED Economy, health care top Bush domestic agenda Unfinished business for Bush in 2003 Washington mulls how to stimulate economy CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) Even as he expressed his faith in the underlying strength of the American economy, President Bush said Thursday he will unveil an economic stimulus package next week with a focus on creating jobs. Aides said tax cuts would be part of the mix. Talking to reporters who joined him on a nature hike on his sprawling ranch, the president rejected criticism from some Democrats that his tax breaks have primarily benefited the wealthy. "I'm concerned about all people," Bush said. "I understand the politics of economic stimulus, that some would like to turn this into class warfare." The president said the economy is "pretty darn strong" despite the recent recession, a breach in corporate confidence as a result of corporate malfeasance and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Bush, Democrats face off on economic stimulus
WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush on Saturday urged Congress to end weeks of delays and quickly approve a stimulus bill to help revive the nation's struggling economy, using his weekly radio address to pressure lawmakers who have been feuding over what form the package should take. Meanwhile, Democrats responded by accusing Republicans of "playing politics" with the stimulus package. In the Democratic weekly radio address, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said the stimulus package approved in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives provided huge tax cuts for big business but does "virtually nothing" to help workers laid off because of the weak economy. The package has been stalled in the Senate, where Democrats are pushing for funds to extend unemployment and health care benefits for workers who have lost jobs during the economic downturn that began last year. Republicans are pushing for more tax cuts, such as one month Social Security payroll tax holiday and tax cuts for businesses.
