ESSE CONTENTS PREFACE INTRODUCTION: THE ECONOMIC FACTOR IN THE NIGERIAN ECONOMIC HISTORY HOW TO USE THE INDEX INDEX ENTRIES ... INDEX LIST OF RECORD GROUPS USED IN THE COMPILATION OF THE INDEX AND THEIR ACRONYMS PREFACE The need for a detailed study of the indigenous economic history of the peoples of Nigeria cannot be over-stressed. In recent years some studies have been made and books published on the Economic History of Nigeria. Such works can best be described as an extension of British Economic History in Nigeria. They are studied relating to British economic activities in Nigeria which means that no serious efforts have been made by economic historians study the various indigenous economic systems, the institutions, organisations and innovations, that made it possible for Nigerians to satisfy their wants before their march towards economic progress was unwarranted interrupted by the British economic imperialism. Economic Historians have not done much work in the study of Nigeria's indigenous economic systems before the advent of the British economic imperialists, this is perhaps due to paucity of information. This compilation is to present to the student the available archival sources which provide information on the indigenous economic systems of Nigeria prior to the changes brought about by British economic activities in the country.

Industry and development
(Economic History)
Sweden is a strongly industrialized Western nation with a free enterprise economy. Several of its companies enjoy a worldwide reputation, and names like Ericsson Volvo and Astra stand for high quality and state-of-the-art products.
Early Industrial Development
The engineering industry made its breakthrough at the end of the 19th century. Some of the companies from this period, like Ericsson ASEA and SKF owe their success to Swedish inventions, and many of them were strongly export-oriented. Often, too, subsidiaries were founded abroad in order to avoid trade restrictions. As can be illustrated by the company names given above, some of these corporations are still going strong and belong to the core of the Swedish engineering industry today.
The developing industry could take advantage of one of Sweden's major natural resources - hydroelectric power. Thanks to the abundance of rivers and waterfalls in the north of the country, electricity was relatively cheap. This substantially lowered the costs of industrial production which, in turn, raised the demand for Swedish products at the international market. Partly as a result of this, the value of the industrial production increased by 150 percent in the period from 1895 to 1914, and the production itself doubled.

Economic Issues
Economic policy often drives other forms of policy. A nation's economic strength often dictates how much it can afford to spend on public needs like health care, transportation, science, or education. It can also affect a nation's ability to afford new regulatory policies targeting things like the environment or safety in the workplace. More fundamentally, economic policy often drives elections, and elections affect issues across the policy spectrum. As a wag once noted when prioritizing the most important issues in a presidential campaign, "it's the economy, stupid." Economic policy has many components, including fiscal policy (government spending and taxes), monetary policy (determining the size of the money supply), and regulatory policy in all its forms, including regulation of business, labor relations, consumer protection, and rules of international trade. In fact, most matters of public policy, even those that are not primarily economic in nature, have some impact on the economy.
