May 1992 General Perceptions of the Relationship Public Beliefs about the Economic Relationship Negative Economic Behaviors: Japan Negative Economic Behaviors: The United States Social studies teachers can play an extremely important role in this critical time in Japan-U.S. relations. While the Japanese deserve criticism for their resistance through informal barriers to foreign imports, the situation in Japan is changing for the better. Students need to understand that Japanese-U.S. trade, and direct investment by each country in the other nation's economy are largely positive rather than negative. Students should also learn that our economic problems are not Japan's fault but largely our own. While the Japanese are mistaken in their belief that Americans are lazy, we have a financial and human capital problem that only Americans can solve.

October 3, 2003 President Bush Discusses Economy, Small Business in Wisconsin
Remarks by the President on the Economy
Midwest Airlines Center
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 10:29 A.M. CDT THE PRESIDENT: Thanks for coming. Thanks for the warm welcome. It's nice to be back in Milwaukee. Today I'm going to talk about some of the challenges which face our country and why I believe our country can overcome any challenge we face. One of the reasons I'm optimistic about the future of our economy is because of the entrepreneurial spirit of America, the entrepreneurial spirit that is strong in Milwaukee and in the great state of Wisconsin; the fact that there are people who are risk takers and job creators, and people who, like me, see a better future for those who are looking for work. I'm here to herald the small businesses which are the strength of the economy of the United States of America. (Applause.)

VI. Collection levels for economics and business I. Introduction Although the subject matter covered by Classes HA through HJ in the Library of Congress classification schedules is denoted in some descriptions as Economics and in others as Business, historians and students of both economics and business, as well as persons directly engaged in business, need and use the entire range of information classified in these schedules. The LC classification schedules for Economics were initially constructed to reflect late 19 th century concepts of economic activity and nineteenth-century economic theory. Economic research and analysis at that time was mainly concerned with elucidating a set of "laws" or self-regulating processes by which production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services take place without deliberate intervention by governments. The focus of economic research has shifted to a search for policies by which economic growth can be encouraged and controlled, fluctuations minimized, and human welfare increasingly well served. Especially since the application of Keynesian theories to stimulate recovery from the depression of the thirties, and increasingly with the ability of mathematical economics (aided by computers) and more refined macroeconomic theory to predict outcomes of various events, government, business, and the general public have come to expect economic research and economic reasoning to provide help for the management of individual lives, corporation management, and the guidance of whole national economies and international cooperation.

Careers in Economics:
What Kind of Job Can I Get With An Undergraduate Degree in Economics?
Professor Donald J. Reeb, Department of Economics Economics consists of three branches, the most familiar of which is that described in The Economist , the Wall Street Journal , the Nightly Business Report on television and in other news media. Employment numbers, Dow Jones averages, discussions of businesses, reports on international trade, auto sales, consumer purchases, Treasury bond prices or similar market information is discussed every day in news reports. Further examples of market discussions can be found in the press releases of corporations, in the hundreds of very popular books on businesses and those on personal investment strategies, on mutual funds and real estate investments, on insurance and in Consumer Reports and other consumer oriented publications. Economic news and publications on economics are familiar to nearly everyone. There is also the branch that consists of economic theory, the attempt to discover and test the relationships that exist in markets. Just what is the relationship that exists between changes in the interest rate and changes in unemployment, is an example of a question that has been asked by economists. University economistsin departments of economics but also in related departments in business schools and public policy schoolsspend much of their time investigating such relationships when they are not teaching. For some, an undergraduate degree in economics is the first step in obtaining a Ph.D. for university teaching and research.
