A Brief Guide to the STAT-USA Internet Database
from STAT-USA
Department of Commerce STAT-USA, a federal office, is the electronic information dissemination arm of the Economics and Statistics Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. As a result of the Onmnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, STAT-USA also is the administrator of the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB) for the federal executive branch. In these roles, STAT-USA is the official one-stop source for electronic information on international trade data, business and economic information from the federal government. Over forty federal agencies use STAT-USA as their official disseminator for their economic releases and reports. STAT-USA is the only place where its possible to simultaneously search for international and domestic economic infor-mation across multiple federal sources. Currently, STAT-USA's principal products and services include STAT-USA /Internet www.stat-usa.gov, the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB) CD-ROM, and USATRADEONLINE, under partnership with the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Objectives of the "The STAT-USA Companion to International Marketing" The objective of this project is to permit users to more effectively use the information in the STAT-USA Internet database. This companion is intended to contribute to implementing STAT-USA's vision statement: "STAT-USA will produce, distribute, and assist other government agencies in producing world class business, economic, and government information products that the American business and public can use to make intelligent and informed decisions."

http://www.english.upenn.edu/~afilreis/50s/schrecker-blacklist.html
"Blacklists and Other Economic Sanctions"
from: Ellen Schrecker, THE AGE OF MCCARTHYISM: A BRIEF HISTORY WITH DOCUMENTS. (Boston: St. Martin's Press, 1994) Even at the height of the McCarthyist furor in the early 1950s, the anti-Communist crusade was relatively mild. Many prosecutions faltered on appeal and only a few foreign-born radicals were actually deported. Only Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were put to death; and of the roughly 150 people who went to prison, most were released within a year or two. Certainly compared to the horrors of Stalin's Russia, McCarthyism was not a drastic form of political repression. But it was an effective one. The punishments were primarily economic. People lost their jobs. The official manifestations of McCarthyismthe public hearings, FBI investigations, and criminal prosecutionswould not have been as effective had they not been reinforced by the private sector. The political purges were a two-stage process that relied on the imposition of economic sanctions to bolster the political messages conveyed by public officials. The collaboration of private employers with HUAC and the rest of the anti-Communist network was necessary both to legitimate the network's activities and to punish the men and women identified as politically undesirable. Without the participation of the private sector, McCarthyism would not have affected the rank-and-file members of the Communist movement or so effectively stifled political dissent. It is hard to come up with accurate statistics for the number of politically motivated dismissals during the McCarthy period, for both the employers and the people they fired tried to conceal what was happeningthe former to protect themselves against charges of violating civil liberties, the latter to obtain future jobs. Yale Law School professor Ralph Brown, who conducted the most systematic survey of the economic damage of the McCarthy era, estimated that roughly ten thousand people lost their jobs. Such a figure may be low, as even Brown admits, for it does not include rejected applicants, people who resigned under duress, and the men and women who were ostensibly dismissed for other reasons. Still, it does suggest the scope of the economic sanctions.

Economic Geography
E conomic geography is concerned with the location and distribution of economic activity. It focuses on the the location of industries and retail and wholesale businesses, on transportation and trade, and on the changing value of real estate. Courses in economic geography may cover such topics as transportation, agriculture, industrial location, world trade, and the spatial organization and function of business activity. Students who have a strong interest in economic geography will be likely to see global interdependence as a focus of their academic program. In America in Transition: The International Frontier, a recent report of the National Govenor's Association, the following statement was made:
Times have changed. Revolutionary advances in science, technology, communications, and transportation have brought nations and peoples together. World trade, and financial, economic, and political developments have transformed disparate economic systems into a highly interdependent global marketplace. Today the nations that inhabit the planet are often more closely linked than neighboring states or villages were at the turn of the century.

In Indiana, the forecast indicates that total employment and the economy will improve, but funding for services provided to Hoosiers by state and local governments will lag behind. According to the forecast, the national economy will continue to grow next year at this year's rate, with the consumer continuing as the key to growth. Investment spending by firms, which plunged during the recession, should stabilize and begin to grow. The gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to increase by 3.2 percent in 2003.
