Franchises Provide Big Boost to Nation's Economy
Study measures jobs, payroll, overall output
Franchised businesses generate jobs for more than 18 million Americans and account for 9.5 percent of the private-sector economic output, a study released March 9 by International Franchise Association Educational Foundation reported. Conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, "The Economic Impact of Franchised Businesses" found that more than 760,000 franchised businesses generate a total economic output of more than $1.53 trillion, or nearly 10 percent of the U.S. private-sector economy.
Franchises, which include such businesses as quick-service restaurants and real-estate agencies, auto repair shops and hotels, directly employ 9,797,000 people, about the same number as the U.S. durable-goods manufacturing sector. Franchising employment is almost as large as that of the information and construction sectors combined. Combining both direct and indirect job activity, franchising generates one out of every seven jobs in the private sector.

Trade and Investment between Japan and BC Trade
  • The British Columbia trade structure, compared with the rest of Canada, is characterized by more reliance on Japan than any other province, and less dependence on the United States.
In 1999, 14.9% of B.C.'s total exports went to Japan. By comparison, in the same period only 2.5% of exports from all Canada were sent to Japan.
In 1999, 67.6% of total B.C. exports were sent to the U.S. This compares with the fact that 86.7% of Canadian exports went to the U.S. in the same year.
Trade from B.C. to Japan increased rapidly from the middle of the 1980s, reaching 27.8% of all B.C. exports in 1990, but since the collapse of Japan's "bubble economy", and due to a surge in the consumer market in the U.S., B.C.'s economic dependence on Japan has now lessened considerably.
In dollar terms, B.C. exports to Japan peaked in value in 1995 at $6.7 billion. However, due to economic stagnation in Japan, especially for B.C.'s lumber and natural resource markets, and because of a relatively strong Canadian dollar in relation to the Japanese yen, the value of exports to Japan since 1995 has continued to decline.
