El Paso and its sister city, Ciudad Juarez, (located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua) comprise the largest metropolitan area on the border between the United States and Mexico; in fact, the downtown areas of these two cities are within walking distance of each other.
El Paso’s proximity to Mexico furnishes an excellent opportunity for businesses to capitalize on NAFTA, the maquiladora industry, and other prospects in Central and South America, especially when used in conjunction with El Paso’s Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) #68. Encompassing over 2,500 acres in 17 non-contiguous sites, FTZ #68 is the lowest cost and second highest volume general purpose FTZ in the United States.

Economics: Introductory, Basic, and General Sources
Basic economic statistics for the United States economy can be found in a variety of both online and printed sources. This web page will help guide you to basic sources of information about economics. Not everything is on the Web; for that reason you will find recommended print titles.
Statistics and Data
The U.S. government collects large amounts of statistical data and economic information. Although Web sites are great places to look, you may find what you want in books too.
Print Titles
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    (UNIV Ready Reference 317.3 S79, 1998)
    • A good place to begin any search for economic, demographic or social statistics about the United States. Use the index to help you find the data you want. Remember, the index refers you to the table number NOT not the page number. This is an indispensable resource for business and economics students.
  • World Almanac
    (UNIV Ready Reference 317.3 W92, 1997)

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Top executives are among the highest paid workers; however, long hours, considerable travel, and intense pressure to succeed are common.
    • The formal education and experience of top executives varies as widely as the nature of their responsibilities.
    • Keen competition is expected because the prestige and high pay attract a large number of qualified applicants.
    • Most government chief executives and legislators are elected; local government managers are appointed.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top A corporation’s goals and policies are established by the chief executive officer in collaboration with other top executives, who are overseen by a board of directors. In a large corporation, the chief executive officer meets frequently with subordinate executives to ensure that operations are conducted in accordance with these policies. The chief executive officer of a corporation retains overall accountability; however, a chief operating officer may be delegated several responsibilities, including the authority to oversee executives who direct the activities of various departments and implement the organization’s policies on a day-to-day basis. In publicly held and nonprofit corporations, the board of directors ultimately is accountable for the success or failure of the enterprise, and the chief executive officer reports to the board.
