SANTA CRUZ
FIELD STATION
The Year of the Ocean (1998) focused attention on the earth’s declining oceans. The sea otter is the keystone species for the nearshore marine environment. Sea otter populations are in decline both in California and Alaska, and the California population is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The lead scientist and staff at the Santa Cruz Field Station conduct research on marine and coastal ecosystems, with special emphasis on the threatened southern sea otter. Science expertise includes behavior and population biology of marine vertebrates, the ecology of marine and coastal ecosystems, inventory and survey techniques, and applied statistics. Research on sea otters is mandated by the U.S. Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. For California, this research is the responsibility of the USGS Western Ecological Research Center. The research program is headquartered at the Santa Cruz Field Station, whose offices are on the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz provides access to California sea otters for field studies and university collaboration. An additional research facility is located at Piedras Blancas in San Luis Obispo County. The main clients are the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Minerals Management Service, California Department of Fish and Game, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS), Olympic National Park, other scientists, and various conservation nongovernment organizations, most notably the Friends of the Sea Otter. The sea otter program also coordinates closely with the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission.

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur in Florida
Chicago, IL- The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced grants totaling $2.5 million to five Florida institutions in honor of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur, who established the Foundation in 1978 and who lived in Florida during the latter years of their lives.
Grants of $500,000 each have been awarded to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (West Palm Beach); the Catherine T. MacArthur School of Continuing Education of Palm Beach Atlantic University (West Palm Beach); the Conservation Fund, a national organization active in Palm Beach County; the MacArthur Agro-Ecology Research Center (Lake Placid); and the Friends of MacArthur Park, an organization that works in behalf of the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (North Palm Beach).
While living in Florida, John D. MacArthur engaged in extensive business and real estate activities. He was instrumental in the founding of Palm Beach Gardens, sold the land on which many southeast Florida housing and commercial developments are now located, and donated land that ultimately became much of what is now the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

Education and Outreach
Information generated through the Jones Center's scientific research program is shared with a diverse constituency, including practicing natural resource professionals, visiting college classes, natural resource and environmental policy-makers, private landowners, regional educators, and other conservation-oriented public- and private-sector interest groups. Education, research, and conservation staff members fulfill the Jones Center's educational mission by interpreting the significance of the center's work in both field and lecture environments. The Ichauway land base provides an unparalleled opportunity for information transfer through demonstration sites of research and conservation activities. Field programs and classroom workshops and short courses are offered to university level students and natural resource professionals on topics such as prescribed fire, longleaf pine forest ecology and management, ecological restoration, wildlife management, threatened and endangered species, wetland protection and management, watershed conservation, and the water resources and aquatic ecosystems of southwestern Georgia.

Director, David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program
SUPERVISOR: Director, Global Priorities Group
LOCATION: Any TNC office in the continental US
The David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program is the nation's only fellowship program focused entirely on applied conservation biology. Its goals are: to create a community of scientists dedicated to bridging the gap between science and its creative application; to build stronger linkages between TNC and the research community; and to support research that delivers critical knowledge to conservation applications. The Director provides overall leadership to the Smith Program and is a member of a collaborative Conservancy team focused on creating connections between conservation research and its applications. In addition to selection and mentoring of Fellows and Scholars, the Director should be the positive and progressive force that guides the research conducted to influence and inform TNC's approach to conservation and elevate these issues to conservation leaders and donors alike. Specific duties include building, managing and marketing the Program and ensuring that it attracts, selects, and supports excellent research fellows. The Director helps identify and focus research themes on conservation priorities, enables professional development opportunities and mentoring relationships for fellowship recipients, and develops ways to measure and amplify the Program's impacts. The Director manages two staff members and oversees the Program budget and administration. He/She is supervised by the Director of Global Priorities and reports to the Program's Executive Board quarterly.

ILTER Meeting - London - 7/16/2001 The meeting began with introductions around the room. A list of attendees is attached to this report. Bob Waide conveyed Jim Gosz’ regret at not being able to attend the meeting. After a review of the agenda, the business section of the meeting opened with regional reports. Africa - Henschel The African regional network is the newest regional network and is still in formation. One national network has been officially constituted (Namibia) and five other countries are in the process of developing networks (Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Botswana, and South Africa). All are part of SADC -Southern African Developing Countries. Conditions for research are somewhat different in this region. There are no national science councils except in South Africa), and therefore government support is mostly in terms of recognition rather than funding. Interactions with researchers elsewhere highly relevant to these networks. Opportunities within the region include diverse habitats, big reserves, crucial dependence by many people on natural resources, unique atmospheric conditions, existing institutional infrastructure, and extensive experience in transdisciplinary research. The next regional meeting is planned for Mozambique in late July 2002.

Class Analysis and Historical Change The CAHC program offers the opportunity to develop a rigorous and systematic understanding of Marxist and other radical frameworks within sociology. The unity of the program lies less in a specific set of substantive areas than in a general commitment to engaging the core questions posed by radical traditions of social theory, challenging the theoretical orientation of mainstream sociology and developing critical alternatives. The program is built around two core courses (given each year), several core seminars (each given at least once every three years) and a number of specialized seminars (given on an irregular basis). Students also participate in the Havens Center Visiting Scholar's Program seminar, in which they have an opportunity to meet with prominent critical scholars from around the world.
