MAERC History Founding On 29 November 1988, The 10,300-acre Buck Island Ranch, Highlands County, Florida, was leased to Archbold Biological Station for 30 years by the John D. and Catherine MacArthur Foundation. The grant established the John D. MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center (MAERC) as a division of Archbold. Mission The primary mission of MAERC is to conduct and stimulate long-term research on the relationships among cattle ranching, citrus production, and the native ecological systems of central Florida. Research Partners During 1994, three organziations (MAERC, University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), South Florida Water Management District) created a cooperative group to initiate a multi-disciplinary research program at the Buck Island Ranch. In 1996 the Florida Cattleman's Association joined the group. These four organizations work together at MAERC in long-term monitoring, plus specific research projects in water quality, wildlife biology, and landscape ecology in relation to agriculture.

he 27 July 2001 special issue of Science focused on research endeavors aimed at "studying ecosystems across the long march of time." The long-term approach to ecological research has spurred new insights into topics ranging from the ecological impacts of overfishing in historical time to the dynamics of plant communities in settings from field to forest. Not surprisingly in an area that stresses huge amounts of data splayed across space and time, and the sharing of observations and insights among scientists in diverse fields the study of ecosystems generally and long-term studies in particular have spawned a rich assemblage of online offerings. Here are pointers to few of our favorites.
