A Renewal of Commitment Two years ago, the University of Illinois Agroecology/Sustainable Agriculture Program (ASAP) received a grant from the Illinois Department of Agriculture Conservation 2000 Sustainable Agriculture program to renew publication of Agro-Ecology News and Perspectives The committee met on December 10, 1997, to discuss the purpose and goals of the revived publication. The advisory committee included U of I faculty, farmers and representatives from agencies and organizations. Following much discussion, the group decided that the purpose of the quarterly publication would be to improve the well being of human and natural communities through the adoption of agricultural practices and farming systems that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially just . The committee set goals for the publication:
  • To inform and promote. To provide a forum for discussion. To increase awareness about sustainable agriculture.
Some of the key ideas for content included: highlight research and demonstration projects; offer references; provide information about conferences and seminars (including links to information available on the Web); serve as a forum for editorials, letters and differing perspectives on the same issues; become a springboard for questions; and carry news of grant opportunities, events and pertinent announcements.

ASEAN environment ministers meet on haze, regional issues
October 6, 2000 Environment ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Friday began a two-day meeting in Malaysia's Sabah state, during which they are expected to discuss haze prevention and other regional issues. Indonesia is expected to renew its commitment to help tackle the forest fires which are blamed for causing the recurrent thick haze that has hit parts of Southeast Asia, with the worst incident occuring in 1997, officials said. The ministers are meeting in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah on Borneo island. Malaysia's environment minister Law Hieng Ding, who is chairing the meeting, said the ministers would look at ways on how to step up regional sustainable development and environment protection. Indonesia's environment minister Sonny Keraf said he would ask neighbouring countries for understanding as crisis-hit Jakarta lacked proper fire-fighting equipment to handle forest fires. In an interview with the Sun daily on Friday, he said Jakarta was aware of regional anger over the recurring haze and forest fires, which he added, were mostly man-made.

Using Ants as bioindicators: Multiscale Issues in Ant Community Ecology

ABSTRACT
KEY WORDS: ants; biodiversity surrogacy; bioindicators; community; diversity patterns; functional groups; multiscale; spatial scale.
INTRODUCTION
Ecologists are increasingly appreciating that ecological patterns and processes are scale-dependent, with observations at one scale often not applying to other scales (Wiens 1989 a , Levin 1992, Schneider 1994). In particular, findings from studies conducted at small spatial scales cannot necessarily be extrapolated to larger scales (Rastetter et al. 1992). This poses a considerable challenge for conservation biology, given that most ecological research involves detailed studies inside small plots (Brown 1995). It indicates a general lack of congruence between traditional scales of research (plots), on one hand, and appropriate scales of land management (landscapes) on the other. For example, fire is an important land management tool throughout the world, but most fire research is conducted inside small plots, where neither fire behavior nor ecological responses are the same as in whole landscapes (Andersen et al.

Ecological Concern Workshop 18 - 25 October 2001 Taipei, Taiwan RATIONALE WSCF-AP initiated an "Ecological Concerns Workshop" as a response to the rapid destruction of eco-system in our region. This workshop aims to enable the WSCF A-P constituency to become more aware of the environmental issues affecting the world and particularly the Asian region in order to respond appropriately with a vision and action plan towards a more environmentally sound and sustainable community. THE PROGRAMME The workshop was held in Taipei on October 18-25, 2001 with 18 participants from 8 SCMs in the Asia-Pacific, including Aotearoa/New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
The workshop was composed of Exposure, Bible Studies, National Reports and Action Plans. During the exposure participants visited Kungliao Nuclear Power Plant that has destroyed the whole eco-system in the Yenliao Bay area. They also climbed up Yan Ming Mountain near Taipei where the nature has been preserved in a good condition. They finally visited Bankah Church which has run a lot of Ecological Programs for the communities for more than 10 years.
The Bible Studies were conducted by Dr. Lin Yih-Ren and Dr. Nancy Chen. Through the Bible Studies, participants tried to articulate a biblical perspective on the ecological issues. Both resource persons spelled out that the Bible reveals the interdependence of the whole creation.

Our review of the available evidence has identified the following certainties concerning biodiversity and ecosystem functioning:
  • Human impacts on global biodiversity have been dramatic, resulting in unprecedented losses in global biodiversity at all levels, from genes and species to entire ecosystems; Local declines in biodiversity are even more dramatic than global declines, and the beneficial effects of many organisms on local processes are lost long before the species become globally extinct; Many ecosystem processes are sensitive to declines in biodiversity;

What's New Growth, ecology issues at forum 07:17 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 By Cliff Despres / Staff Writer Development and the environment remained the hottest topics as the candidates seeking two Denton City Council seats and the mayoral spot took turns answering questions Monday during a Denton Neighborhood Alliance forum at City Hall. In the most heated of the three races, each up for election May 15, Place 5 council member Bob Montgomery is facing Ed Soph, an environmentalist and college professor. "It’s coming and we have to cope with it," said Montgomery, 68, who is seeking a second term. "We’re trying to find a solution because it’s not one size fits all." Soph said he wants the city to gain an environmental perspective on development, establishing things such as a neighborhood planning office in the city, an overall smart growth policy and an environmental commission. "I will work to ensure a vibrant community with economic and environmental assets," said Soph, 59.
