    The Loss of Biodiversity
"The most serious threat to the continuation of all life on this planet is the loss of biological diversity: the varied living beings that inhabit the globe." "It is true that the problem of disappearing species represents not only a conservation crisis on a scale never faced before, but also one of the greatest environmental challenges we are ever likely to confront." These quotes from Kennedy (1990, p. 17) illustrate the gravity of the ecological problem facing humankind - the loss of biodiversity. Although there has always been loss of species as part of the evolution of life, the rapidity with which it is currently occurring largely through anthropogenic influences, is the worrying factor.
Biodiversity at the Species Level - Flora
Botany is the science that deals with all forms of plant life, including mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants, and organisms formerly considered plants: algae, fungi, and lichens . Humans are heavily dependent on plants for oxygen, food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. Yet a surprisingly large percentage of the world's plant species remains unknown, their potential benefits to mankind hidden. Museum botanists are dedicated to documenting the origins and providing classifications of plant life in marine and terrestrial environments and to understanding how humans are affected by and have altered the plant world.

    The Water Poverty Index
Millions of people throughout the world do not have enough water to sustain their livelihoods — so they have reduced capacity to lift themselves out of poverty. The relationship between poverty and water is complex, but water is such a valuable resource that it must be managed responsibly, to ensure long-term sustainability for future generations. The Water Poverty Index (WPI) captures the characteristics that link water and poverty. It has been developed in consultation with water researchers, practitioners and stakeholders. This international multi-disciplinary team has identified key issues that provide the framework for a holistic composite indicator, combining data from the physical and social sciences. The WPI framework can be applied at all levels. Communities can assess their own WPI values, and make comparisons. A training package will ensure appropriate in-country capacity so that this can be achieved. R esearch Strength
We have long been known for excellence in experimental ecology, from critical approaches to accepted paradigms to the development of new concepts. Recent faculty hires span the interface between ecology and evolution, and have broadened our group to include all organismal aspects of population biology.
    E volution
Our traditional strength in evolution is in evolutionary ecology, including such areas as life history, plasticity and mating systems. To this we have added comparative and systematic biology with the recent hires of David Swofford, Scott Steppan and Greg Erickson, and theoretical and genetic aspects of evolution with the additions of Thomas Hansen and David Houle. These strengths make Florida State an extremely exciting place to pursue studies of evolution at the level of the organism.
    E cology
Florida State University has long been at the forefront of ecology. Work here on the role of competition and the niche done at FSU in the 80’s changed the direction of ecology. Another tradition has been the melding of ideas from ecology and evolution. Our newest hires, Brian Inouye and Nora Underwood, complement these traditions with work on spatial aspects of species interactions, and plant-herbivore interactions. Four of our ecologists are marine biologists, including new hire Janie Wulff. We also have a strong emphasis on conservation ecology, exemplified by the involvement of many faculty in management issues.

What is a wetland? Wetlands have been described as a "halfway world between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that exhibit some of the characteristics of each." They form part of a continuous gradient between uplands and open water. Wetlands tend to have seasonal and fluctuating conditions that make it difficult for one definition to adequately describe all wetland types. Wetlands have many distinguishing features, the most notable of which are the presence of water, unique wetland (hydric) soils, and vegetation adapted to, or tolerant of, saturated soils. Wetlands are not easily defined, especially for legal and political purposes because:
  • they have a considerable range of hydrologic conditions they are often found along a gradient at the margins of well-defined uplands and deepwater systems they vary in size, location, and human influence.
