provides publication of research and review articles on all aspects of animal behaviour. Articles should emphasize the significance of the research for understanding the function, ecology, or evolution of behaviour. Research articles may be in the form of full length papers or short research reports. The Editor encourages the submission of short papers containing critical discussion of current issues in the study of animal behaviour. Monograph-length manuscripts on topics of major interest, as well as descriptions of new methods are welcome. A Forum, Letters to Editor and Book Reviews are also included. Also available are Special Issues which are not published periodically and which vary in price according to the issue. Editor in Chief

INTRODUCTION
This training module, Working Respectfully with Families: A Practical Guide for Educators and Human Service Workers was developed for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's Integration of Education and Human Services Project. The goal of this project is to increase the ability of education and human services providers to form effective and supportive partnerships with each other and with the families they serve. The purpose of this background paper is to familiarize the trainers of these modules and participants in the workshops with the research, theories, and practice knowledge that are the foundation of the workshop. The specific strategies and applications of a Family-Centered Approach are covered in the workshop materials.

The EC MAST III project is centered on an important and recently discovered genus of marine photosynthetic microorganism Prochlorococcus. This prokaryote proliferates in oligotrophic areas, including the Mediterranean and Red Seas, and is the tiniest and numerically the most abundant photosynthetic organism and accounts for a large part (up to 50%) of the photosynthetic biomass and primary production in these areas.

Graduate Studies in Ecology At the global, national, and local levels, interest in ecological research and education has increased. The biosphere is experiencing increasingly severe assaults by pressures of expanding human populations. Climate change, tropical deforestation, and profound reductions in biodiversity are among the serious environmental concerns that are global in scope. At regional scales, water quality and quantity, endangered species, the threat of introduced exotic species to regional biodiversity, and the rapid disappearance of riparian ecosystems are paramount. Attention to the need for research and education in the ecological arena has risen dramatically in response to these threats. Arizona State University's strong group of ecology faculty in Life Sciences (core faculty) and other departments (supporting faculty) are taking on the challenge of training graduate students into the 21st century. A goal is better integration of basic research and ecological applications such as conservation, management, and environmental protection. Faculty in the Departments of Biology and Plant Biology offer graduate degree programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with a concentration in Ecology. Students acquire broad backgrounds in Biology or Plant Biology, and specialize in a wide variety of ecological sub-disciplines. Students also have opportunities to interact with environmental scientists (supporting faculty) in twelve different departments across the University.

E cological topics are listed under three headings: 1) Ecology, 2) Conservation Biology, and 3) Botany and Systematics. Links to home pages of botanical and ecological societies are provided in the Journals and Societies List. The Ecological Software List offers links to sites describing software applications for analyzing or organizing ecological data. The Natural Resource Agencies List provides links to home pages of government agencies that conduct ecological research or that are responsible for the management of various ecosystems. The Natural Areas and Reserves heading lists links to sites that feature information about natural areas, LTER sites, national parks, and wilderness areas. The Environment List refers to sites dealing with ecosytem conditions and the Environmental Societies List is a catalog of links to home pages of environmental organizations. R esources included here will be of interest to botanists, plant ecologists, conservation biologists, resource managers, and to students at the university or high school levels. In addition, many of these web sites may be useful to those wishing to learn more about local or global environments. In a time when humans are increasingly influencing and integrated with the ecosystems in which we live, it is important for all of us to be literate in basic ecological concepts and aware of environmental issues.

Central to that research has been the application of ecological principles to the conservation of rare and endangered species and their habitats. Recent studies of the stopover and breeding biology of Neotropical migratory birds along the northern Gulf coast and in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are examining the relationship between populations of these birds and landscape scale patterns of habitat availability and land use. Methodologies and habitat models developed for birds are also being used to create new approaches for sampling and monitoring salamander populations.
