Restoration Ecology Certificate Introduction Three easy steps to enroll in the certificate program! Fees Out-of-State Tuition Fees are waived for this program. Additional fees may apply as specified by program director. The Restoration Ecology Certificate provides background and depth in the concepts and tools currently used in restoration ecology. It consists of five courses (12 credits), which are available over the Internet. The first four courses may be taken in any order, but the capstone course, Practicum in Restoration Ecology, RRT 580, requires two of the other four courses as prerequisites. With graduate committee approval, graduate students may include the certificate courses as part of their study plan. Nondegree students can enhance their knowledge in this area without seeking a graduate degree, and simultaneously build a strong foundation for a master's degree at a future date. (Nondegree seeking students are defined as those who may or may not have a previous BS degree and are not seeking a degree at UI at this time). Prior to starting work on the four Restoration Ecology Certificate 500-level courses, students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 2.8 or receive permission from the

Nature of Program
The Utah State University (USU) Ecology Center is an administrative structure in the University that supports and coordinates ecological research and graduate education in the science of ecology, and provides professional information and advice for decision makers considering actions that affect the environment. Administratively, the Center is part of the University's Division of Research, and integrates the efforts of faculty and graduate students in 3 colleges and 6 departments. Participating faculty have tenure in their home departments, and graduate degrees are conferred in the participating departments. With state support in the University budget, the Center's program is a major mission of the institution. Academically, a primary Center purpose is to provide a basic scientific underpinning for the basic and applied ecological programs in the Colleges of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Science. But many of its research projects address applied natural resources and environmental problems. See current projects under

About the Course
Ecology focuses on the interaction of organisms with each other and the environment. This course examines the proximate and ultimate causes of patterns in the distribution and abundance of individual organisms, and in the composition, structure and dynamics of communities, ecosystems, landscapes, and the biosphere. We study these relationships, often in quantitative terms, in both field and laboratory settings, using both theoretical and empirical approaches.
Course Objectives
  • Learn to think like an ecologist
  • Learn some tools an ecologist uses
  • Learn information about ecology
