Aims and Scope
Ecology Letters is a forum for the very rapid publication of original research in ecology. Manuscripts relating to the ecology of all taxa, in any biome and geographic area will be considered, and priority will be given to those papers exploring or testing clearly stated hypotheses. The journal publishes concise papers that merit urgent publication by virtue of their originality, general interest and their contribution to new developments in ecology. We discourage purely descriptive papers and those merely confirming or extending results of previous work.

VEGETATION APPLICATIONS:
AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY, AND ECOLOGY
General Principles For Recognizing Vegetation
Because many remote sensing devices operate in the green, red, and near infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, they can discriminate radiation absorption and reflectance of vegetation. One special characteristic of vegetation is that leaves, a common manifestation, are partly transparent allowing some of the radiation to pass through (often reaching the ground, which reflects its own signature). The general behavior of incoming and outgoing radiation that acts on a leaf is shown here: Now, consider this diagram which traces the influence of green leafy material on incoming and reflected radiation. These spectral variations facilitate fairly precise detecting, identifying and monitoring of vegetation on land surfaces and, in some instances, within the oceans and other water bodies. Thus, we can continually assess changes in forests, grasslands and range, shrublands, crops and orchards, and marine plankton, often at quantitative levels. Because vegetation is the dominant component in most ecosystems, we can use remote sensing from air and space to routinely gather valuable information for characterizing and managing of these organic systems.
One of the most successful applications of multispectral space imagery is monitoring the state of the world's agricultural production. This application includes identifying and differentiating most of the major crop types: wheat, barley, millet, oats, corn, soybeans, rice, and others.

Tropical Ecology Working Group Actual information German collaborators Brazilian counterparts Projects ... Journals Research aims and methodology
Since 1980 the working group has used a holistic approach for a general description of the structure and function of Central Amazonian floodplains. This approach led to the formulation of the flood pulse concept published in 1989. The concept states that the flood pulse is the driving variable of the system and that biotic and abiotic processes in the Aquatic-Terrestrial Transition Zone (ATTZ) are primary regulators of species composition, food webs and nutrient dynamics. During recent years, there has been increasing emphasis on understanding land-water interactions, particularly within the context of the concepts of ecotone, landscape heterogeneity and patch dynamics. Floodplains are sometimes interpreted as ecotones between upland and rivers, and sometimes they are viewed as specific ecosystems. We foresee that our studies of the floodplains in Brazil will make significant contributions to the controversial discussion of the ecotone concept. During the past few years, the working group has gradually shifted its focus to the following questions, which we consider to be of special interest for the study of floodplain systems.

The project CLICOFI is a part of the European programme ELOISE: European Land Ocean Interaction Studies and takes place between 04/1998 and 03/2001. The general objectives of this project is to investigate the possible impact of climate induced temperature change on the distribution and population dynamics of cod and eelpout by evaluating the effects of temperature regime on the ecological, physiological and genetic level and to integrate the results in a unitary model of the temperature sensitive response of the selected fish species.
The outline research project is designed around four research approaches :
  • Retrospective studies on long term data series of climate conditions and population dynamics of cod and eelpout. Field campaigns for sampling material from different climate regions for population parameters, physiological and genetic investigations. Experimental studies on physiological key processes, genetics and growth rates.

General Information Why Choose A Major Other Than A Science Major? Why Choose A Health Ecology Major? HE Advisor for Professional Schools ... Health Ecology Home
    General Information
College students who want to go on to schools in the health professions (medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, etc.) can do so through almost any major. The trick is to add the right electives that meet the specific course requirements of the schools to which you, the student, will apply. You don't need to take a science-based major—even English majors, philosophy majors, and history majors can compete with the more traditional "pre-health profession" majors if they plan their college career with that goal in mind. The less science required in your major, the more science you will need to add as electives. Even though all majors have a certain number of elective credits, if your major is not a straight science major (biology, etc.) that often means you will need more than the minimum number of courses during your undergraduate years (the minimum at UNR is usually 128 semester credits for graduation). That shouldn't deter you, but it does mean you should plan well.
