Home Contact EEBB Graduate Program in EEBB How to Apply ... Other Links Welcome to the Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior Program at Michigan State University! The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior is a multidisciplinary program of study and research leading to a Master's specialization or dual-major Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior and one of the traditional disciplines offered by thirteen participating departments. The questions below are of interest to us at Michigan State University. Our Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior faculty and graduate students ponder these and many other fascinating questions. Do these sorts of questions interest you?
  • How do evolutionary changes in component populations influence community structure and ecosystem function?
Are ecological communities structured by universal "assembly-rules" or is each community a unique product of history, chance and environment?
Can demography and population genetics provide conservation biologists with accurate assessments of minimum viable population size?

B.A. - 1972 University of Delaware, Newark, DE M.A. - 1975 Boston University, Boston, MA Ph.D. - 1982 Duke University, Durham, NC Postdoctorate: 1983 - 1986 Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS Field Behavioral and evolutionary ecology: intraspecific competition, foraging behavior, predator-prey interactions. Interests I am studying an aphid, Hormaphis hamamelidis , that forms galls on the leaves of witch hazel plants. Each gall contains a female (the stem mother) and up to 50-70 of her offspring, all daughters. Galls are not distributed randomly, but instead tend to be clumped on certain leaves and trees. I am interested in the behavioral mechanisms that cause this clumping and how this affects the reproductive success of both the aphids and the plants. There are other aspects to this insect-plant interaction that are also quite interesting. For example, some of the aphids within a gall appear to act as "workers," leaving reproduction to their sisters. This phenomenon may shed some light on the evolution of social behavior in insects.

About Us
W ild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary , formerly known as Candy Kitchen Rescue Ranch is a nonprofit organization providing safe sanctuary to abused and abandoned captive-bred wolves and wolf-dog crosses. With focus on education, ecology and the environment, responsible ownership of wolf dogs and the humane care of all animals, companion or otherwise. We are located in the Zuni Mountains near the small town of Ramah, New Mexico. Candy Kitchen Rescue Ranch (as we were then known as) was founded in 1991 by fine artist Jacque Evans. The unlikely name came from the fact that the sanctuary is located at an old ranch headquarters of the same name. We changed our name in 2004 as "candy kitchen" proved just too confusing, choosing instead a name more reflective of our mission. Jacque had originally supported Candy Kitchen's efforts with the sale of her art work until 1993, when Barbara Berge moved to the area and served as General Manager until 2003. Leyton Cougar joined the team in 1996, and now serves as Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary's Director.

Academic Programs Bachelor of Science Programs Forestry The forestry degree program in forestry introduces students to all aspects of the profession. After completing a core of courses in basic forestry, science, communications, mathematics, and economics, students choose electives from the following specializations: ecosystem management, wildlife ecology and management, or forest ecology. During the fall semester of their junior year, students devote their time to a field practicum at the Ford Center and School Research Forest , becoming familiar with silviculture, site quality estimation, mapping, estimating tree growth, wildlife habitat and log scaling and grading. [Requirements] [First Year Schedule] [Course Sequence] [Course Descriptions] The applied ecology degree program prepares students to understand and find solutions to environmental problems. Students learn how to manage ecosystems and ensure the conservation of natural resources. This program is interdisciplinary and educates students in sociological, political, and economic facets, as well as the basic and applied sciences. Ecology students also spend a semester of outdoor study in a field practicum at the Ford Center and School Research Forest . Applied ecology and environmental sciences students choose from three concentrations: Wildlife Conservation Ecology, Plant Ecology and Wetlands or Communicating Natural Resources.
