The Triumph of Capitalism? A Chinese proverb says: "I curse you to live in the times of change." Which is sometimes translated as: "I curse you to live in interesting times." In such interesting times we are living at present. Big changes and realignments have been taking place in front of our eyes. The spectre of Communism seems to be no longer haunting the Capitalist world. On the contrary, in the battle between Communism and Capitalism, over its social superiority, Capitalism has handsomely won. The distinguished economist and social thinker, Robert Heilbroner, recently published an article on this very subject. The piece is provocatively titled: "The Triumph of Capitalism," and it opens with these words: Less than seventy-five years after it officially began, the contest between capitalism and socialism is over: capitalism has won. The Soviet Union, China and Eastern Europe have given us the clearest possible proof that capitalism organizes the material affairs of humankind more satisfactorily than socialism: that however inequitably or irresponsibly the marketplace may distribute goods, it does so better than the queues of a planned economy; however mindless the culture of commercialism, it is more attractive than state moralism; and however deceptive the ideology of a business civilization, it is more believable than that of a socialist one..1. Yet, Heilbroner is aware that not all is well. He thus asks a significant question: "I capitalism working well enough?" Once we have asked this question, we confront a very serious problem indeed.

Research and Education in Ecology, Conservation and Forest Biology
Since 1907 research and education have been the mission of the Harvard Forest, one of the oldest and most intensively studied forests in North America. From a center comprised of 3000 acres of land, research facilities, and the Fisher Museum the scientists, students, and collaborators at the Forest explore topics ranging from conservation and environmental change to land-use history and the ways in which physical, biological and human systems interact to change our earth.
    June Highlights
New Laboratory Equipment Awarded to Harvard Forest
Harvard Forest was recently awarded $59,640.00 from a National Science Foundation grant to purchase new nutrient analysis equipment for community, ecosystem, hydrological, and physiological research. The grant was a Multi-User/Instrumentation and Instrument Development Grant (DBI-0400759) submitted in autumn 2003 by a team of researchers and collaborators including David Foster, David Orwig, Aaron Ellison, and Betsy Colburn of Harvard Forest, Michele Holbrook of Harvard University, Paul Steudler of The Marine Biological Laboratory, and Paul Barten of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The award will be used to purchase a new multi-channel, automated ion analyzer with ion chromatograph to be housed in the Harvard Forest John G. Torrey Laboratory. These instruments will used to meet the increasing demand for nutrient analyses of soils and water in individual trees, forests, bogs, fens, streams, pitcher plants, and their invertebrate food webs. The equipment will be an ideal complement to the lab and will be applicable to many current and future research projects. Users will be comprised of faculty, staff, and students from several Harvard University Departments, outside collaborators and institutions, visiting Bullard Fellows, and undergraduate students participating in the Harvard Forest Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program from a wide range of outside universities, small colleges, and community colleges.

    Greg Noland, Dallas, TX
Molecular Microbiology and Immunology integrates many disciplines (biochemistry, virology, parasitology, molecular biology, immunology, ecology structural biology) concerned with the study of the transmission, immunobiology, and pathogenesis of bacterial, parasitic, viral, and immunological diseases of public health importance. Research is at the population, organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. The central premise of this broad approach to the study of disease is that public health problems can best be addressed by understanding basic biological mechanisms. Our research aims to advance the understanding of the biology of disease and to use this knowledge to solve public health problems. Research takes place in the laboratory, in the clinic, and in the field, as the faculty works to combat such enormous public health problems as malaria, sexually transmitted diseases, mosquito-borne encephalitis, tuberculosis, diarrhea, measles, AIDS, and autoimmune diseases. We offer master of health science ( MHS ), master of science (

The School of the World is a traveler's education school located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the town of Playa Jaco (map) . The programs offered at the school are some of the most original and innovative options available for travelers today, offering more learning vacation options than any other language school or surf camp in Costa Rica. Costa Rica's beautiful countryside, friendly native Spanish speaking people, and stunning beaches form the perfect backdrop for studying Spanish, surfing, art, and digital photography.
    Study Spanish
    in Costa Rica
Founded in 1997, the School of the World began as one of the first options for studying Spanish near the beach in Costa Rica (most of the language schools are located in or around the capital city which is in the center of the country). College credit soon became available for the unique program and the school continued to grow rapidly. The school's Spanish language courses incorporate international Spanish teaching guidelines with Costa Rica's local variations of the language. While the program covers all aspects of Spanish, teachers place a heavy influence on developing verbal skills. Studying in a Spanish speaking country allows students to immediately practice what they have learned with native Spanish-speaking people.
    Surfing
    in Costa Rica
Surfboards are more common than cell phones in this small town, so it was only a matter of time before we began to teach surfing to our students. The surf program was born approximately one year after the school was established. Due to the fact that the Playa Jaco area is well known to have great waves and warm water year-round, it is only natural that so many people come here to learn how to surf. Catering to both first-time and advanced surfers the School of the World quickly became one of the premier surf schools for Costa Rica surfing classes.

Education is at the core of much of what Arc Ecology does. In some cases we analyze environmental, economic, social and strategic data and educate the public about our findings. In other cases we step back and acquaint people about why they ought to be concerned in the first place. Education is built into every component of Arc Ecology’s program and project work. At the beginning of Arc Ecology’s second twenty years, we are working to develop new models for public education. All Arc Ecology projects are multi-disciplinary and address multiple program areas.
