Knowledge Ecology: Knowledge Ecosystems for Business Education and Training Dr. Paul Shrivastava Howard I. Scott Professor of Management Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA 17837 Tel: 717-524-1821; Fax 717-524-1338 email: shrivast@bucknell.edu Abstract This paper proposes a knowledge ecology framework for organizational learning and knowledge management. This framework is applied to the business education and training industry. The paper describes the Socrates Program, as an example of a knowledge ecosystem for business education. Based on its early implementation experience, several implementation barriers are identified. Future research needs for developing and implementing organizational knowledge ecologies are discussed. Key Words: Knowledge, Ecology, Education Knowledge Ecology: Knowledge Ecosystems for Business Education and Training There are several reasons behind the emergence of knowledge management as a strategic issue. A central reason is the advent of what some people are calling the "the digital economy". This is the economy of the future based on information technologies, computers, and telecommunications technologies. It is building around the Internet, WWW, e-commerce, and information services. The digital economy both enables and requires organizations to continually learn new knowledge and systematically deploy it for value creation (Pinchot and Pinchot, 1994; Quinn, 1992; Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1995). The digital economy implies fundamental changes in the way business is organized and conducted in every functional area. Electronic commerce is large and growing rapidly with over a million businesses already engaged in it, in some form. It is enabling global distribution of goods and services. It is integrating order processing with production scheduling. It is eliminating intermediatory structures in the distribution of products. Convergence of computing, communications and content is reinventing wealth creation through services. Web based training and performance evaluation is changing the way human resources are admitted, accounted for, and transformed in organizations. In brief, the digital economy prioritizes the centrality of information and knowledge for all organizations. It makes knowledge management a strategic issue (Linstone and Mitroff, 1994; Negroponte, 1995; Tapscott, 1997).

This training module, Working Respectfully with Families: A Practical Guide for Educators and Human Service Workers was developed for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's Integration of Education and Human Services Project. The goal of this project is to increase the ability of education and human services providers to form effective and supportive partnerships with each other and with the families they serve. The purpose of this background paper is to familiarize the trainers of these modules and participants in the workshops with the research, theories, and practice knowledge that are the foundation of the workshop. The specific strategies and applications of a Family-Centered Approach are covered in the workshop materials.

Industrial Ecology in Higher Education
Industrial ecology is becoming an increasingly common reference at universities throughout the world. It is featured in courses, seminars, conferences, and research centers. ISIE members have expressed interest in having a source for finding IE-relevant programs. This listing , compiled by Kristan Cockerill, current Secretary of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE), is a first step in helping people see what is currently available. The information provided here was gathered from faculty and researchers at universities as well as via Internet searches of all accredited U.S. schools. This is by no means an exhaustive report on all programs that might have IE-relevant degrees and/or research. There are likely many universities offering programs that fit within the IE paradigm that were not uncovered in this effort. If you would like to submit information about a program at your university, please send information to Kristan Cockerill

Scientific researches on the Transcendental Meditation (TM)
Research conducted around the world documents that the program is effective for all cultural and ethnic groups. All age groups benefit, from increased alertness in infants of meditating parents to increased health, happiness, and longevity in meditating elderly. People spanning the full range of socioeconomic levels and intellectual abilities benefit, again indicating the universality of Maharishi's program. The following briefly summarizes the overall research findings by category: physiological, psychological, sociological, and ecological.
Physiological Benefits
The original landmark research on the physiological correlates of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique was published in Science, American Journal of Physiology, and Scientific American in 1970-1972 (papers 1, 3, 4). This research found that the Transcendental Meditation technique produces a physiological state of restful alertness. During the technique the physiology becomes deeply rested, as indicated by significant reductions in respiration, minute ventilation, tidal volume, and blood lactate, and significant increases in basal skin resistance (an index of relaxation). At the same time the physiology is alert rather than asleep, as indicated by an increased abundance of alpha waves in the EEG. These findings led researcher Dr. Keith Wallace to conclude that restful alertness is a fourth major state of consciousness, termed transcendental consciousness, that is physiologically distinct from ordinary waking, dreaming, and deep sleep (paper 2).
