Human Ecology News Youth Activities Keep Kids Out of Court This is a followup news story from the presentation "Designing Divergence Programs for Adolescents," presented by David Andrews, PhD, at The College of Human Ecology's Risky Behaviors of Adolescents symposium May 7-10, 1997. COLUMBUS, Ohio - Some of the most successful youth diversion programs aren't run through court-appointed programs for juvenile offenders. After school athletics, 4-H and Scout clubs and mentoring programs like Big Brother/Big Sister are what really work, according to an Ohio State University Extension youth development specialist. "The idea of diversion programs is to develop as many hooks as possible that bring adult volunteers and young people together in engaged activities," said David Andrews, who is assistant director of the Ohio 4-H program and a professor in the College of Human Ecology. "If you can design systems that do that, you've gone a long way in terms of diverting people from problem activities." Andrews spoke Friday, May 9, 1997, on "Designing Divergence Programs for Adolescents" during the symposium: "Risky Behaviors of Adolescents: A Symposium Integrating Research, Practice, and Policy."

Nevertheless, the global concepts of environmental education, the basic principles of ecology, and the importance of environmental responsibility can be instilled in a child without reference to faraway places. These ideas can all be made concrete right where the child lives and goes to school. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY One of the fundamental tenets of ecology is that all activities have by-products. In environmental education, it is understood that this tenet applies to all activities of nature, both natural and human-induced. Some of these by-products are called "pollution."
