Statement of My Teaching Philosophy. I enjoy and greatly benefit from teaching. For me, helping students to understand the content and process of knowledge construction in the various disciplines of science in which I have taught always leads to an improved clarity and a sense of renewal in my own pursuits. I view the classroom as the crucible of knowledge and inquiry from which teachers and students emerge as both better teachers and better students. Science education, when successful, hones imagination and perception. Curriculum must challenge students to observe and explain phenomena, which is the fundamental role of science. The momentum is building in our society to improve the science literacy of our children. Given the explosion of scientific information this century, there is a great need for reorienting curriculum toward teaching students how to use available resources to find things out for themselves. In addition, science curriculum needs to equip students with investigative methods, whether in the library, laboratory, or field. Curriculum should emphasize student development of the critical observation, thinking, and analytical skills of scientists, and reinforce content retention activities within appropriate contexts. These are guiding principles that permeate all of the courses I teach.

Day Programs (Field Trips)

Field Trip day programs at FBES are a great chance for students to:
  • Explore amazing ecosystems like tide pools, beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes and coastal forests. Spend time away from school learning with their classmates in an exciting natural environment. Learn important science concepts through hands-on, active lessons taught by trained educators.

School groups can come to the FBES site, or our naturalists can meet classes at another location, such as a nature preserve or state park near your school. Our staff is very flexible, and we can tailor the field trip to cover your curriculum needs. We do however, have some standard day programs that we offer.
Topics include: beach geology, waves, origin of sand, beach zones, tides, beach life and adaptations. Activities:
Beach Scavenger Hunt
Making Sand
Adapt to Hang On
Tide Demonstration
Forests are great places to do hands-on ecology activities because of the abundance of neat plants and animals. Our naturalists focus on interrelationships, energy flow, cycles and change while exploring the forests and ponds of the area. Topics Include: Activities: Freshwater Mucking Animal Sign Scavenger Hunt Build A Forest Tide Pools The tide pools of East Point are home to an incredible diversity of life, including seastars, mussels, crabs, anemones, lobsters, eels, limpets and much more! Students can find and observe these intertidal creatures while learning about the unique geology and climate of the rocky intertidal zone.

BEACH TEACH FOR K-12
Grades K through 12 will explore the Ecological Reserve of La Jolla Shores Beach in this fun, hands-on, field-science program. Each program is designed around the tides, weather conditions, and student grade level. Activities may include investigating the tidepools, discovering organisms in the sandy beach, interpreting water and weather data, and studying kelp plant ecology. Since field activities are dependent upon the tides, our program schedulers will assist you in planning your Beach Teach accordingly.

Clark Fork Watershed Festival The Clark Fork Watershed Festival teaches 600 Missoula-area sixth-graders about the geography, ecology and culture of our watershed. It consists of:
  • Two classroom visits by University of Montana students who teach hands-on watershed activities and prepare the students for the field trips. A student journal/workbook to guide students through the classroom and field trip lessons. A full-day field trip to Fort Missoula in April. Students rotate through 8 stations to learn watershed concepts including fish identification and ecology, aquatic insect identification and ecology, noxious weeds and their impact on a riparian area, Glacial Lake Missoula, pollution sources and solutions, and historical uses of the river and its role in opening the west.
