EARTH DAY - EVERY DAY
In ancient India, over 2,003 years ago, as annual public works projects, kings and emperors planted trees along the roads to provide shade for weary travelers. Today, people all over the world are working hard to keep our planet green. Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week) is a time put aside each year to remind us all how important it is to accomplish this goal. These sites explain why it's so important to keep our planet green, and what we can do to help. Have fun learning about Earth Day!
Rosa Stewart School has created a program that both celebrates Earth Day and raises money for their school called Litter Bucks!

Ecology: Labs and Activities
Kids Do Ecology
By the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, this excellent education site is designed to provide young scientists with web-based activities. The site links to basic data on marine life and suggests research projects and other activities. Experiments to Teach Ecology
The Ecological Society of America site includes online instructions for ecology experiments, including a population ecology model using duckweed and activities to study foraging and flocking behavior. Advanced Arthropod Studies Curriculum
Developed by students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the curriculum includes units on collecting arthropods for study using a Berlese funnel (an easy-to-construct collection device). The curriculum was designed for students to study arthropod variation and taxonomy, and quantitatively analyzing arthropod populations. The Charms of Duckweed
This site on the popular duckweed plant offers botanical facts and tips for growing duckweed in the lab; explains practical uses for the plants in environmental engineering, agriculture, and environmental testing; and links to duckweed projects that examine the effects of fertilizers, explore population dynamics, and set up a phytotoxicity bioassay. USGS Learning Web: Land and People: Finding a Balance
This program includes a teacher and student packet (downloadable .pdf files) for studying ecosystem resource issues in three different regions in the U.S. Cape Cod, Los Angeles, and the Everglades.

    Field Ecology Notebook
    By Donna Cates
Field Ecology is designed to teach students general scientific methods, procedures, and thinking skills, as well as specific methods and procedures used to study plants and animals in their natural setting. The objectives for this project are as follows:
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply scientific methods to solving problems.
  • Demonstrate proper methods of observing and recording scientific data.
  • Demonstrate the ability to measure in metric units and graph data correctly.
  • Assess the interrelationships of living and non-living factors in a specific habitat.
The student will select a one-meter square area near his home that is in a natural setting. Observations are to be made in the area at least once a week, weather permitting, from January until April 1. Beginning April 1, observations must be made twice a week, until the end of the term. A notebook must be kept and must include the following:
    • Temperature recordings
    • Description of location, including a drawing
    • Soil description
    • Description of number and kinds of plants and animals
    • Description of changes observed after introducing a food source
    • Recording of rainfall during the interim periods
    • Recording of emergence of plants and measurememnts and graphs of their growth
    • Observations of interactions among organisms
The following list includes suggestions for optional entries that will enhance the observations:
    • Identification of organisms into genus and species
    • Temperature variations from morning to afternoon to night

Abstract: This book of lesson plans uses the science contexts of populations and ecology to create activities that teach math concepts such as patterns and algebra, data analysis, and graphical representations. The activities teach about the science setting of the problem, the math skills required to analyze the situation, and ask students to draw conclusions about the real-life applications of the answers they find. Lessons use a variety of teaching techniques, but most are designed for cooperative learning that includes time for students to investigate the concept in small teams or individually. Math topics covered include rates and growth over time, units, percentages, and representing data. The science contexts use the ideas of carrying capacity, natural resources, biodiversity, and climate change. Each activity includes procedures, teaching tips and answers, and blackline masters for student worksheets.

The Kids Ecology Corps is about your using what we call Kid Power to make change. If you want to make changes, you have to make a commitment . Making a commitment means sticking to something until it is done. It also means that you have made a decision. If you make good decisions, the changes you make will be good changes. If you want to change something that is too big for you to change by yourself, you have to work with other people. What happens if you and your friends and a lot of other people believe the same thing? What happens when everyone who believes the same thing works together? They become what is called a critical mass . They can put lots of energy into making a change. When they make a commitment to work together, they can make big changes. Sometimes the changes are so big that the whole world changes.

    Post-Trip Activities
1.) Refer to field trip journals. Students should design food chains/webs based on what they observed from the field trip. Arrows should be used to connect plants and animals. Label appropriately: producers, consumers, decomposers. 2.) Have the students write a report/story, design a web page or create a PowerPoint presentation about their field trip to the salt marsh estuary. Students should include both the activities they conducted as well as thoughts/reflections on these activities Example: Why did we conduct water quality tests? Why are these tests important? What kind of wildlife did we see/not see? Why? Etc.
3.) Again, using various media, students can research a special wetland topic such as: wetland values, endangered species, wetland characteristics, types of wetlands, wetland products, food chains/webs, biodiversity, etc., and make a brief presentation to their classmates or teach another class that may not have participated in the wetland field trip. Presenters should submit 2 questions about their topic to the teacher. These questions can be used for a wetland quiz. 4.) Have students write a skit about what they think the Meadowlands will look like 20 years from now. You can send the Environment Center a copy of the script. We'd like to see students' perceptions of what the future may be like.

KIDS - Never give out any personal identifying information over the internet or in email (such as your name, address, phone number, school or family information). Seek the advice of a parent, guardian or teacher. We prepared this information in response to a request from a young student who attends a school for the blind. She wanted some ideas for starting an ecology club at her school. Suggestions for starting an ecology club:
Develop a plan and present it to your science teacher for review.
Modify the plan with the advice of your teacher.
Designate an adult to be club supervisor and advisor.
After approval by the school, invite all students to participate.
Elect club officers or committee leaders.
Decide on name for club, which can be Ecology Club or another name of choice.
Choose a project to begin researching and working on together. (start out with a simple project first) Think about what materials will be needed and how to obtain them.
