Sudan may have new form of Ebola virus
Last Updated Sat, 22 May 2004 19:02:10 NAIROBI, KENYA - A new strain of Ebola virus may have caused of the latest outbreak of hemorrhagic fever in Sudan. According to the World Health Organization, four out of the 10 people infected in the current outbreak of Ebola fever have died. Blood samples tested at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control show the outbreak is not linked to any of four known strains of the virus. Since Ebola was first discovered in 1976, two of the strains have caused epidemics with 50 to 90 per cent mortality in Sudan, Congo, Gabon and Uganda. The highly infectious disease is characterized by severe weakness, pain, fever and vomiting. Some victims experience a rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding. The reservoir of Ebola, where the virus exists between outbreaks, has not been identified. Written by CBC News Online staff H e a d l i n e s : W o r l d

Ebola hunter relishes trips inside African 'Hot Zone'
Dr. Scott Dowell, left, was among the CDC officials helping contain the Ebola outbreak in Uganda By Troy Goodman CNN.com Health writer ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Most travelers would avoid booking a plane trip to a country where a red alert was issued for an outbreak of severe hemorrhagic fever. But Dr. Scott Dowell jumped at the opportunity several weeks ago when his bosses at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta asked him to join up with a CDC team flying into Africa to help contain the latest spread of deadly Ebola virus. Five years ago, in fact, Dowell had already gone to the Central African country of Zaire where Ebola had emerged and had begun killing hundreds of people. The desire to help control the disease's spread and possibly save lives keeps him from worrying about the risks. ALSO

    Ebola death toll reaches 120
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (Reuters) The death toll in a deadly Ebola outbreak has risen to 120 in the northwestern Republic of Congo, the central African country's health ministry said on Wednesday. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Men's Health Women's Health Care for the whole family An official at the ministry said 135 cases had been recorded since the virus, which has no known cure, struck in January in the dense forests of Cuvette-Ouest, some 700 kilometers (440 miles) north of the capital, Brazzaville. Authorities say the disease has now almost been brought under control. Ebola is passed on by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of victims, depending on the strain. It starts with a high fever and headache and can lead to massive internal bleeding. Authorities have cordoned off the affected areas and local people have been told not to touch bodies of those who have died and not to eat primates. Scientists believe the outbreak was triggered by the consumption of infected monkey meat. Bush meat is a staple among forest communities, and a delicacy in many cities.

But even as the international forum was being planned, a new tragedy was befalling these endangered species. Recent research has revealed that the spread of the deadly Ebola virus has devastated populations of gorillas and chimpanzees, hastening their relentless march toward extinction. advertisement

by Julie Rathbun New York, 1990 : Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets , dies suddenly from a virulent infection impervious to antibiotics. Milwaukee, 1993 : Approximately 400,000 people are sickened by an obscure intestinal parasite, cryptosporidium, contaminating the city's water supply. Seattle, 1994 : Eleven children with chicken pox contract a "flesh eating" bacterial infection requiring most to have surgery to remove infected tissue. Zaire, 1995 : An estimated 244 people die from Ebola, a hemorrhagic fever virus for which there is no cure. It is spread through contact with bodily fluids and secretions. Such headlines shouldn't surprise us. Throughout history, infectious diseases have ravaged humanity, from the bubonic plague or "Black Death" of the 14th century to the "Spanish influenza" epidemic of the early 20th century. But Americans have become complacent about infectious disease. First came the discovery of penicillin in 1929 (followed by other antibiotics); then the start of widespread vaccination programs and improved sanitation and education. The scourge of smallpox was wiped off the face of the Earth in 1977; we assumed others would follow. In the 1980s, our world began to change. Newspaper headlines carried words like AIDS

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees) and has appeared sporadically since its initial identification in 1976.
    Source and causes
The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where it was first recognized. Confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Sudan, the Ivory Coast and Uganda. Challenges One of the major obstacles to fighting this disease is the very limited understanding that we have of the virus and its patterns of emergence and propagation.

Vaccine protects monkeys from Ebola infection
(AP) For the first time, a vaccine protected monkeys against the lethal Ebola virus, raising doctors' hopes of developing a means of inoculating people against the terrifying disease. Four macaques that were injected with the experimental vaccine suffered no ill effects after being exposed to normally lethal doses of the virus. Four macaques that were not inoculated died within six days.

    About:

Ebola is used as a bridge between AV engines (e.g., Sophos) and scanning scripts (e.g., Inflex and AMaViS) to provide much-improved performance by handling file scanning requests on behalf of the scripts while keeping a SINGLE session of the AV engine open, rather than restarting one each time.
