Last updated Friday 12.03.2004 10:47 AM I realise that I never really got round to putting a a proper explanation of what happened to Ebola. The somewhat lengthy tome below is taken from Ebola's final release which is a split LP with Jinn, the band I currently play in.
postage and packing to wherever you are in the world. You can now pay by Pay Pal but you will need to email me for instructions. We also have copies of a split LP with Jinn and The Suicide Handbook available for the same price if you are interested.
Micky 12/03/2004 It's a bit of an odd concept this, writing an epitaph for one band and an introduction for another, especially when you are the thing that links the two pieces of the Jigsaw together. Ebola [Andy Nolan, Chrissy, Johnny, Karin and Micky] came into being in Newcastle upon Tyne some time in the summer of 1995.
We played two gigs in Belgium under the name of Spite after which we decided to change our name to avoid confusion with the other band of the same name! [As were sure most of you are aware there was an Ebola in Berlin, and apparently one in Australia and the USA. Also there is supposedly an Oi band in France called Ebola.]

Ebola outbreak kills 18 in Congo
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Congo (Reuters) An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus has killed 18 people in northwestern Congo Republic, where the disease killed 120 earlier this year, state television said. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Ebola virus Democratic Republic of Congo or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? One hundred and sixty-four people have come into contact with the disease around Mbomo, some 700 km (440 miles) northwest of the central African nation's capital Brazzaville and just across the border from Gabon, Tele-Congo said on Monday night. Teams from Congo Republic's health ministry, the World Health Organization and aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres were in the Mbomo region trying to break the chain of contamination. There is no known cure for Ebola, which is passed on by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of victims depending on the strain. The disease damages blood vessels and can cause bleeding, diarrhea and shock. Its worst outbreak, in 1995, killed more than 250 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

(above) Ebola virus docks with cell membrane at middle left. Viral RNA (yellow) is released into the cytoplasm where it directs the production of new viral proteins and genetic material. New viral genomes are rapidly coated in protein to create cores. These viral cores stack up in the cell and migrate to the cell surface. Transmembrane proteins (purple) are produced which are ferried to the cell surface. Cores push their way through the cell membrane becoming enveloped in cell membrane and collecting their transmembrane proteins (spikes) as they do so. Examples of coiled virions are shown in the background.

Ebola Spurs Fears of Looming Ape Extinction Sean Markey
National Geographic News
April 7, 2003
For more than a year, conservationists in equatorial Africa have witnessed an Ebola epidemic burn a deadly trail through great apes at the heart of their range. The lethal virus has felled hundreds of endangered western gorillas and common chimpanzees from populations already devastated by commercial hunting and habitat loss elsewhere on the continent. Now, in the latest grave news from the region, researchers announced yesterday that numbers of great apes in Gabon have declined by more than half in less than 20 years. Experts fear the decline is even greater outside Gabon and that, unless trends are reversed, great apes could become effectively extinct in as little as two generations. Researchers report great apes species including western gorillas (above) and common chimpanzees in Gabon have been halved in less than 20 years, felled by disease and poaching.

Where Does Ebola Hide Between Epidemics? Stefan Lovgren
for National Geographic News
February 19, 2003
When villagers in the remote jungles of the Republic of Congo began falling ill last month, scientists quickly suspected Ebola. The virus had been confirmed in tests on the bodies of animals found dead in surrounding forests, and bush meat is a staple among the local population. Knowing how people may initially have contracted the virus has given medical experts a jumpstart on the epidemic, which has so far killed at least 64 people. But the larger question remains. Where does the deadly Ebola virus hide between outbreaks? "Primates die from Ebola," just like humans, said Dick Thompson, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization, which has sent a team of experts to the region. "The virus must live somewhere else in the environment."

Pulse of the Planet The search for a natural host has eluded scientists ever since the first Ebola epidemics in 1976. The quest is a catch-22. While an outbreak offers the best opportunity to find the natural reservoir, the priority for virus hunters is to contain the epidemic. In the process, the trail often goes cold because the virus kills so swiftly it covers its tracks.
