Researchers discover cause of bleeding in ebola
WASHINGTON (AP) Researchers have identified the portion of the Ebola virus that causes massive bleeding, the frightening hallmark of the deadly disease that has begun appearing periodically in Africa. Although Ebola is not common or widespread, it has received much attention since first being reported in 1976 because of the fear generated by the heavy bleeding and the disease's 90 percent death rate.

WHO confirms Ebola outbreak
The ebola virus GENEVA, Switzerland The World Health Organisation says there had been at least one case of the deadly Ebola virus in Gabon. The confirmation follows reports that 10 people had died of a mystery illness in the Central African country. A WHO official said in the Gabon capital Libreville on Friday that 10 people, including a nurse, had died in Gabon from a disease it was feared could be Ebola. The WHO told Reuters from its Geneva headquarters on Saturday at least one case of Ebola had been reported from Gabon. At least 66 people died from Ebola in the same area of Gabon in 1996. Another WHO official said on Friday 28 people had died of haemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo and doctors feared that outbreak might also be Ebola. There is no known cure and no vaccine for Ebola, which causes up to 90 percent of victims to bleed to death in a matter of days.

For more technical and truthful information on Ebola the virus go to the links page.
Since the release of such popular books and movies like Outbreak and The Hot Zone "ebola" has come to mean much more than just a disease, it is now a business, a career, and an attitude. I would even go so far as to say that ebola is a psychological condition.
Ebola: 1. (v.) Acting in a manner that is out of control, crazy, insane, Ebola . Ex: Chuck came in and went completely Ebola , he threw a desk and strangled that poor kid.
2. (adj.) Word used to describe someone or something that frequently acts in an ebola manner. Ex: how would I describe Chuck? Well, he's nice, but kind of Ebola if you know what I mean.
As you can see, the connotations of the word Ebola are many and growing fast. These connotations are derived from the erratic behavior of monkeys in the movie Outbreak , and the extremely violent nature of the virus itself. Someone acting in an Ebola manner can be described as being in a

Ebola outbreak 'not contained'
Ebola is spread through bodily fluids and has a two to 21-day incubation period. Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) U.N. health officials confirmed on Wednesday that a disease outbreak killing scores of people in the Republic of Congo was Ebola and warned that the highly lethal haemorrhagic fever could still be spreading. "We're not suggesting that this is over or even contained. We're treating it as an active outbreak," Iain Simpson, a World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman in Geneva, said. So far, 73 people have been infected, of whom 59 have died, according to WHO investigators. Government health officials in the tiny Central African nation report 80 cases with 67 deaths. The Cuvette West region, where the deaths have occurred, has been quarantined by the government since last week. Blood samples drawn from victims in the region tested positive for the Ebola virus, Josef Mboussa, a top official in Republic of Congo's health ministry, said. The disease is one of the world's deadliest, causing rapid death through massive blood loss in up to 90 percent of those infected.

Bill Delaney: Ebola scare in Canada
February 7, 2001 Web posted at: 4:13 p.m. EST (2113 GMT) Bill Delaney is CNN's Boston bureau chief. Q: What is this woman's nationality, and how did she arrive in Canada? Delaney : What we have had confirmed by a Canadian national health official is only that she is African. She is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She had come to Canada via New York over the weekend up to Toronto and then had gone the hour's drive from Toronto to Hamilton, Ontario to visit two friends in Hamilton. She did not show any symptoms, by the way, of any illness until she arrived in Hamilton. Doctors say that's very good news for anyone who may have had contact with her before she got to Hamilton because Ebola is a disease which is not contagious until it manifests symptoms. The two people she had come to visit are apparently at some risk, but we have no more information on their status; but they could have come in contact with their friend in a manner that could be dangerous. MESSAGE BOARD Would the Canadian public health system be able to handle an Ebola outbreak?

Treatment recommendations for patients infected with Lassa, ebola, Marburg, and CrimeanCongo viruses, and ways to prevent contagion.

Management of Patients With Suspected Viral Hemorrhagic Fever
INTRODUCTION The term viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) refers to the illness associated with a number of geographically restricted viruses. This illness is characterized by fever and, in the most severe cases, shock and hemorrhage (1). Although a number of other febrile viral infections may produce hemorrhage, only the agents of Lassa, Marburg, Ebola, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fevers are known to have caused significant outbreaks of disease with person-to-person transmission. Therefore, the following recommendations specifically address these four agents. The increasing volume of international travel, including visits to rural areas of the tropical world, provides opportunity for the importation of these infections into countries with no endemic VHF, such As the United States. Since most physicians have little or no experience with these viruses, uncertainty often arises when VHF is a diagnostic possibility. Lassa, Marburg, and Ebola viruses are restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, and the differential diagnosis of VHF will most often be made for illness in travelers to this region. Since 1976, no imported cases of VHF have been confirmed in the United States, but every year there are approximately five to 10 suspected cases. These guidelines review the clinical and epidemiologic features of these diseases; provide recommendations on diagnosis, investigation, and care of patients; and suggest measures to prevent secondary transmission. This document updates earlier recommendations, issued in 1983 (2), for the management of suspected and confirmed cases of VHF. Accumulated evidence shows that transmission of these viruses does not occur through casual contact; thus, some earlier recommendations for preventing secondary transmission have been relaxed. Similarly, therapy recommendations have taken into account recent knowledge of the effects of antiviral drugs.

  • The Mindanao, Philippines Outbreak
The outbreak of EBO-R in the United States caused by infected monkeys in the United States prompted the Philippine government to investigate whether the workers in the primate facilities were at risk for contracting EBO-R, and, if so, to what degree they were at risk. The investigative team studied 186 people, 48 of whom were from wildlife collection areas and the remaining 138 were from the four primate export facilities in the area (Ferlite Farms being one of the four). Twelve of the 186 people tested had serological evidence of infection with EBO-R. 22% of the workers at Ferlite Farms had positive IFAT (indirect fluorescent antibody test) titers, which was significantly higher than at the other three export facilities. Of the five employees in Ferlite's animal hospital, four had positive IFATs. Workers in the hospital had more positive titers than the rest of the workers at Ferlite Farms.
All of the monkeys at Ferlite were killed after this outbreak of EBO-R in 1989.
