    Earthquakes
by Borgna Brunner There are thousands upon thousands of earthquakes annually, ranging on average from 18 major quakes to more than 2 million very minor ones per year (approximately 8,000 per day). On average, we can expect one exceptionally big one (with a magnitude of 8 or higher) each year.
    Earthquakes
    plate tectonics
Earthquakes in residential areas, such as this 1964 one in Seward, Alaska, can cause unparalleled damage to life and property.
    Not "On the Richter Scale"
Although "on the Richter Scale" is still a commonly used expression, the scale , developed by Charles F. Richter of California Institute of Technology in 1935, is no longer the most commonly used magnitude measurement . One of its flaws is its imprecision in measuring the biggest earthquakes, those in the range of 8 or 9.
Different methods of measuring magnitude have superseded the Richter Scale , including surface-wave magnitude, which measures the seismic waves crackling around Earth's surface, and moment magnitude, the newest method, which is based on the size of the fault on which an earthquake occurs and the amount the Earth slips. Moment magnitude is the most uniformly applicable scale.

FACTBOX: Chronology of China's major earthquakes
An earthquake devastated two rural counties in northern Hebei in 1998 Story Tools BEIJING, China (Reuters) China's most devastating earthquake in recorded history hit northern Shaanxi province in 1556, killing an estimated 830,000 people. In 1995 China put into force a law to improve emergency response to earthquakes. State media reported at the time that more than 610,000 Chinese had been killed by earthquakes in that century. Earthquakes regularly rattle the vast Tibetan plateau, including Tibet itself, the far west region of Xinjiang and Qinghai province. They are also common in southwest Yunnan province and northern areas. Quakes are relatively rare in central China and along the eastern seaboard but the northwest is frequently hit by tremors. The following is a chronology of some of the biggest earthquakes in recent decades: July 1976: At least 270,500 people die when an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale flattens the northern city of Tangshan.

Provides early warning by detecting an earthquake's sound wave before the earthquake's destructive shear wave strikes your area. Fully adjustable sensitivity setting. Automatically resets and shuts off alarm when earthquake stops. Mounts easily to wall. No screws, nails or tools required. Operates off a 9-volt battery. 6" high x 3" wide x 1-1/4" deep Loud distinctive alarm to wake you up. Monitors aftershocks. Offers peace of mind and keeps you informed. Can detect earthquakes that occur many miles away. Saves valuable seconds by removing the normal guesswork involved in earthquake detection. Patented reverse pendulum detection system. The Quake Alarm is designed to provide instant warning of seismic activity by detecting the "P" wave (compression wave) of an earthquake, which travels faster than the more destructive "S" wave (shear wave). The Quake Alarm saves valuable seconds by removing the guesswork in earthquake detection. It is capable of detecting large earthquakes that occur hundreds of miles away and can detect moderate to minor earthquakes for many miles around your local area. One very important advantage of the

Introduction
Earthquakes are one of the most powerful natural forces that can disrupt our daily lives. Through careful study, geologists are slowly learning more about such questions as these:
Why do earthquakes occur?
Why do some locations such as California and Japan receive so many earthquakes?
Can earthquakes be predicted?
Can we design a city to better withstand an earthquake?
Can we stop earthquakes before they occur? Should we try?
This lesson will guide you through several activities to help you think like a geologist. You are free to move around from one part of the lesson to another by clicking on the special hypertext. However, you will understand each activity better if you complete them in this order:
  • Building Your Own Seismograph (optional)
  • Can You Read a Quake?
  • Where Did It Hit?
  • Shadows from the Core
  • Prediction or Prevention ... Teacher Plans
    What is an earthquake?
Perhaps you remember being in an earthquakethe ground rumbles, hanging lamps begin to sway back and forth, shelves begin to rattle or spill their contents, the floor and walls shake.... Even if you do not remember seeing or feeling an earthquake, you have probably lived through thousands of tiny earthquakes during your lifetime. The earth is constantly creating earthquakes.

New Zealand's position on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific plates is the reason for the large number of earthquakes we witness. Underneath New Zealand these two huge plates are grinding together in three distinct ways. To the east of the North Island the Pacific plate is being forced under the Australian plate. Under the South Island the two plates push past each other sideways, and to the south of New Zealand the Australian plate is being forced under the Pacific plate. There is still a great deal to learn about the causes of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides. The new and higher quality information from the GeoNet monitoring network will be crucial to improving our understanding of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides. The data from GeoNet will contribute to improving disaster risk management in New Zealand communities. A better understanding of the hazard provides the basis for improved readiness and reduction of the community’s exposure to risk, while accurate and timely information aids the response to an event and subsequent recovery.

2nd Anniversary of the Earthquake in Turkey
In August 1999, a massive 7.4 earthquake shook western Turkey, followed shortly thereafter by a second quake. The American Red Cross had been working with the Turkish Red Crescent Society to provide assistance to victims, funneling supplies, financial assistance and human resources into the area. A year after the first quake, the American Red Cross and the Turkish Red Crescent entered into a mutually beneficial partnership to build capacity for response to future earthquakes, with an emphasis on high population, urban, high-risk areas.
