Earthquakes in BC Earthquakes in British Columbia
British Columbia experiences an earthquake every day, but only a small number of these quakes are noticeable and even fewer result in damage.
View of landslide on Mount Colonel Foster triggered by the June 23, 1946 Vancouver Island earthquake (photo courtesy of the Geological Survey of Canada). Several major earthquakes have hit B.C. in the last 100 years and there is a very good chance we will experience large earthquakes in the future. We live in a high-risk zone because of the geological processes that take place within the crust of the Earth in B.C. Plates in the Earth's surface shift to produce earthquakes and the science of geology can help determine which ground types will be most affected by a quake. An important step in ensuring your own safety is to understand the answers to the following questions: What causes earthquakes? How big are earthquakes? Where do they occur? What is a megathrust earthquake? ... How can geology be used to minimize risk? Note:

How Earthquakes Work

We generally think of the ground we stand on as "rock-solid" and completely stable. An earthquake can shatter that perception instantly, and often with extreme violence. Up until relatively recently, scientists only had unsubstantiated guesses as to what actually caused earthquakes. Even today there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding them, but scientists have a much clearer understanding. Reducing Earthquake Losses Throughout the United States
The Mississippi Valley-"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"
In the winter of 1811-12, the central Mississippi Valley was struck by three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today, this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Government agencies, universities, and private organizations are working to increase awareness of the earthquake threat and to reduce loss of life and property in future shocks. The 400 terrified residents in the town of New Madrid (Missouri) were abruptly awakened by violent shaking and a tremendous roar. It was December 16, 1811, and a powerful earthquake had just struck. This was the first of three magnitude-8 earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks to rock the region that winter.

The New World-Wide Earthquake Locator
The World-Wide Earthquake Locator was originally developed by Bruce Gittings of the School of GeoScience at the University of Edinburgh in 1995 and it became an early illustration of a real-time Geographical Information System , which makes use the internet World-Wide Web and the internet. After a long period without maps, we have recently further developed the system to provide robust and easy-to-use mapping as context for the earthquake records. The Locator takes data from the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), part of the US Geological Survey, based in Golden, Colorado (USA). This data provides basic information about the location of a recent earthquakes and their strength within hours of the events taking place. The data is then processed into an appropriate format here in Edinburgh and finally displayed using a mapping service also provided in Edinburgh. Earthquakes can be enormously destructive, yet they happen much more regularly than most people imagine. A tool like the "World-Wide Earthquake Locator" could help Emergency Services and Aid Agencies identify disasters and quickly organise their response. It is also possible for Earthquake Scientists (called Seismologists ) to use information gathered about recent earthquakes to try to predict the occurrence of larger and more destructive events.

The finger service is no longer available. Few sites these days permit finger queries so this service isn't as useful as it once was. Furthermore, many sites view finger queries as a breach of security, so it has become too much of an administrative burden to support this service. The finger gateway still provides faces support, just not finger support. PLEASE do not email us asking where you can find this service elsewhere, or how to find your long lost friend. We don't know, and your email will likely go unanswered due to the sheer volume of queries of this nature we receive.

47. Tsunamis & Earthquakes At The USGS
General information on how earthquakes generate tsunamis and summariesof tsunami research using animations and VRML models.
http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/tsunami/
Below you will find general information on how local tsunamis are generated by earthquakes as well as animations, virtual reality models of tsunamis, and summaries of past research studies. The scope of tsunami research within the USGS, however, is broader than the topics covered here. USGS researchers have also provided critical research toward understanding how sediments are transported during tsunami runup (see, for example, analysis of deposits (1.8 MB) from the recent Papua New Guinea tsunami) and deciphering the geologic record of prehistoric tsunamis (for example, in the Pacific Northwest ). The USGS also collaborates with the tsunami research group at NOAA . As part of this effort under the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program , the USGS has upgraded the seismograph network and communication functions of the west coast tsunami warning system (termed CREST Consolidated Reporting of EarthquakeS and Tsunamis). For further information select one of the topics below. Other tsunami sites are listed on the links page

Earth: All Stressed Out by Daniel Pendick To experience the drama of plate tectonics the jostling of the giant plates that carry continents and oceans try this experiment: Sit in a comfortable chair, hold your hand out, and watch your fingernails grow. That's about the average speed of a tectonic plate. But wait around long enough, and even the tortoise crawl of plate tectonics will have dramatic and deadly consequences. Though plate tectonics is a global phenomenon and virtually invisible to us in our daily lives, it introduces enormous stresses in the crust where we live. From time to time, stressed-out crust releases the stress in sudden fits: earthquakes.
More frequently than time to time, actually. If you imagine the Earth as a giant bell, it's ringing with earthquakes every second of the day from the many imperceptible clinks of microquakes to the deafening gong of very occasional but "great" earthquakes (those of magnitude 8.0 or greater). The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that several million temblors, most undetectable, happen every day. The great earthquake of 1906 devastated San Francisco, killing 700.

Earthquake risk is high in much of the southern half of Alaska, but it is not the same everywhere. This map shows the overall geologic setting in Alaska that produces earthquakes. The Pacific plate (darker blue) is sliding northwestward past southeastern Alaska and then dives beneath the North American plate (light blue, green, and brown) in southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands. Most earthquakes are produced where these two plates come into contact and slide past each other. Major earthquakes also occur throughout much of interior Alaska as a result of collision of a piece of crust with the southern margin. (Click on map for a larger version - .pdf file, 312K.

SFQUAKES FALL TO BUFFALO JUMP
May 27, 2004 - The SFQuakes were on the defensive Thursday night as they battled it out with the Buffalo Jump. The team fell behind yearly in the game 0-3, but mounted a comeback and maintained a one goal deficit for most of the game. John was in goal tonight for Jerry and did a very respectable job dealing with the tough Buffalo Jump sharp shooters.
Dan got the team on the board with a baseball-style swing at a mid-air pass from Mike C. and clearly caught the goalie off-guard. Marcus got the second goal with a beautiful breakaway where he took his time to find an open hole. BJ had the team's final goal with a slapshot from the point that managed to find its way through a huge crowd in front of the net. There were many other close chances, such as when new sub Jason Hartline positioned himself perfectly at the back door (that's on the far side of the net from where the action is for you hockey newbies) and he almost buried a pass from Marcus and Bonnie.

Earthquakes rumble through Philippines
Story Tools MANILA, Philippines (AP) Two strong earthquakes struck the central Philippines just hours apart, damaging houses and knocking out power. There were no immediate reports of casualties, officials said Sunday. The second, stronger Philippine temblor, with a magnitude of 6.2, struck at 7:01 p.m. Saturday and was set off by movement in the Philippine Fault, a major fault line running from the country's mountainous north to the south, the Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology said. It was strong to enough to topple old buildings but hit sparsely populated rural areas, said government seismologist Ishmael Narag. The first quake, with a magnitude of 5.5, occurred at 1:47 p.m. Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, jolted Tokyo and surrounding areas Sunday, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. In the Philippines, damage was reported in Masbate, one of at least seven central provinces where the earthquakes were felt. Masbate lies about 230 miles southeast of Manila. The Office of Civil Defense in Manila reported that the second earthquake collapsed an empty Muslim day-care center beside a mosque in Masbate's capital city, Masbate.

  • Choose a safe place in every roomunder a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you. Practice DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON at least twice a year. Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there's no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases, or tall furniture that could fall on you. Teach children to DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON! Choose an out-of-town family contact. Consult a professional to find out additional ways you can protect your home, such as bolting the house to its foundation and other structural mitigation techniques. Take a first aid class from your local Red Cross chapter. Keep your training current.

Fun With Science
If you're looking for ideas for a science fair project or demonstration, these pages may help you find a topic that would be fun to explore. They also provide ideas for teachers who are looking for classroom demonstrations or hands-on, inquiry-based student exercises to expand their curriculum. I am a US Geological Survey Geophysicist specializing in seismology and earthquake location programming. I enjoy all sorts of science and would like to see more K-12 or K-16 lessons taught on the subjects of tectonics, earthquake processes and earthquake hazards. In addition to Earth Science classes, these topics could be covered within general science, physics, math, and even social studies and geography classes. Not only do earthquakes provide an interesting context within which to teach concepts that are already part of the curriculum of these other subjects, the eventual result of incorporating these topics would be a greater understand and appreciation of the value of mitigating the hazardous effects of future earthquakes within the population as a whole. Projects and lesson plans described in the Earth Science section include a table-top earthquake demonstration, an earthshaking lab, a shake table, and a paper model that illustrates sea floor spreading, subduction, faulting, and the source of volcanic arcs.
