The Man Who Fell To Earth
Nicolas Roeg, USA, 1976, 140 minutes Roeg's imaginative and edgy science fiction story is much more than that: it is also a commentary on contemporary America, a love story, and a brilliant set-piece to show off demonstrate Roeg's nervy directorial style. This was the film that set off the real-life spaceman-obsession of lead actor David Bowie (aka 'Ziggy Stardust'), and it's easy to see why. Bowie apparently became obsessed with the character he played, Newton, the alien who comes to Earth in search of water for his planet - but his only knowledge of things here comes from remotely monitoring television, and he soon becomes embroiled in Earthly affairs, becoming a business tycoon. The soundtrack consists of pop music of the time, and this adds to the mixture of banality and surreality that characterises the world which Roeg portrays. The film is shot in a non-linear fashion, instead using typically Roeg-esque thematic cross-cutting to highlight relevant juxtapositions in the text. The film is both technically and photographically impressive, and is a marvel at all the levels on which it operates. Review by Iain Lang

DeMille. DeMille was the perfect director to render all the glamour and flashy hoopla of the circus, nor is it surprising to find Charlton Heston, whose career was filled with spectacular, sprawling films, in the starring role here.
SYNOPSIS
'THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH'.
THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH is a superb DeMille production which was carefully and expensively constructed, filmed with love in every frame. Its 153 minutes are loaded with charm and excitement, and the cast is outstanding, particularly Heston. Though Betty Hutton overacts a bit (as usual) in her role, Cornel Wilde is perfect as the egotistical aerialist, James Stewart is touching as the tragic clown, and Gloria Grahame makes an effectively sexy, manipulative circus lady. DeMille also throws in a few amusing cameo appearances by planting Paramount celebrities in his circus audience. In one scene Bob Hope and Bing Crosby are gaping spectators, looking up anxiously at the aerial stunts while nervously munching peanuts.
The railroad wreck was done in miniature but was so well constructed that it appears quite real. In other scenes, DeMille was extremely inventive, mounting his cameras on pulleys and having them slide up and down the support poles of the main tent. The resulting film, both authentic and awesome, earned

These disciplines are based on the study of a specific location, then expanding via concentric circles, into the surrounding areas in order to identify possible diffusion among the various polities.
However, as with any bulls eye target, at times an arrow (or spear) from a foreign source will strike any one of the defined circles, creating a tear in the fabric called diffusion. Until the source of the arrow is discovered, there can be no sensible explanation of the culture.

175. Organa > Salt Of The Earth
tells the background of the movie, made during the height of the McCarthy era by a group of blacklisted filmmakers. Based on a 1950 strike by zinc miners in Silver City, New Mexico.
http://www.organa.com/salt.html
Salt of the Earth is based on a 1950 strike by zinc miners in Silver City, New Mexico. Against a backdrop of social injustice, a riveting family drama is played out by the characters of Ramon and Esperanza Quintero, a Mexican-American miner and his wife. In the course of the strike, Ramon and Esperanza find their roles reversed: an injunction against the male strikers moves the women to take over the picket line, leaving the men to domestic duties. The women evolve from men's subordinates into their allies and equals.
In addition to the complete film, the Salt of the Earth CD-ROM provides film lovers with the screenplay in English, Spanish, French, and German, along with background material on the making of the film, the Hollywood blacklist, the filmmakers, and the original strike. The VHS version contains only the film.
Salt of the Earth is available in both CD-ROM, VHS, and DVD formats:

Description:
This fantastic HBO miniseries cost $68 million to produce! Executive producer Tom Hanks introduces each episode of the miniseries which alltogether cover the United States' space program from its inception in 1961 to the last mission from the Earth to the Moon in 1972! This is the perfect mix of factual information and entertaining drama. The realism is unbelievable due to extensive special effects and elaborate sets. Helium balloons were used to enhance the appearance of the astronauts walking on the moon. Weightless scenes were filmed in Nasa's "zero gravity" trainer aircraft. Actual Nasa spacecraft were used in the filming of From The Earth To The Moon.

Welcome!
Scorch has yet another new URL - hopefully this will be the last. We are now hosted by Classic Gaming , which should solve our bandwidth problems. While you're here, you might notice our new ads (alas, the price of bandwidth). Hey, at least some of them are gaming ads, right? Also, you might want to check-out Fragmaster's review of Scorch. To celebrate, we are making version 1.2 once again available. Why? Well, we've gotten a lot of requests from the curious, so it's now here, archived in all it's glory. If there's interest, we may even dig up a copy of 1.0. Finally, we're looking at making more mountainscape available. If you're interested in helping with this project, email us. Scorched Earth version 1.5 is the current version . See below for downloading info. Note #1 : Some anti-virus software may falsely report a virus while decompressing the Scorch file found at this site. Be assured that this file has been verified clean. So far, the only reported case is with Norton Anti-Virus reporting a Ten Past Three virus. If anyone gets any other false hits, please let me know so I can post them here.

Domain dispute hits earth
Last modified: February 12, 1999, 3:55 PM PST By Dan Goodin
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
A Massachusetts clothing company has sued the owner of a small hobbyist Web site in federal court, alleging that his domain name, earth.com, infringes the company's trademark. In an interview, earth.com owner Tony Sanders said he was served with the complaint today, although the lawsuit was filed in federal court in Boston last November. Sanders said his site does not conduct any commercial activities and added that he's been using the domain name since 1994, long before Framingham, Massachusetts-based Mondial Trading Company used the name Earth to market a line shoes. According to Mondial's complaint, the company acquired 1985 trademarks for the terms "Earth" and "Earth Shoe." "Without authorization from Mondial, the defendant registered earth.com as a domain name on the Internet under the name earth.com," the complaint alleged. Sanders, who said he will be unable to afford an attorney to fight the lawsuit, contended that Mondial bought the rights to the terms only after he had registered his Web site. That factor weighs in favor of him legally using the domain name, he said. Sanders said the non-commercial purpose of his Web site also prevented Mondial from prevailing on trademark infringement claims.

Earth Viewer Earth Viewer was written primarily for elementary school students. It shows the daytime and nighttime portions of the Earth for any day of the year. You may choose either of two views - Globe or Map Globe shows the planet as it would appear from space. Map shows a flat view of the entire surface. Click on the button to switch to the view you want. When viewing the Globe , you can center the latitude and longitude of any point on the surface by adjusting the scroll bars, or by clicking on the point you want to center. The date and time may be set as you please, and can be reset to the current date and time by pressing the reset button. Times are always shown in the local time your computer is set for. The images can be animated by selecting the Animate button. Daily animation shows the Earth as it appears every fifteen minutes; Seasonal animation shows it every 7 days. NOTE - I've added a list of cities to the control panel. In the globe view, selecting one of the cities from the list will rotate the globe so that the selected city is centered in the view. This is currently just an experiment, so the list is short; the list is not available from the map view, since it doesn't make sense there. Please let me know what you think of this feature; if it's popular, I'll probably expand the list to include the world capitols.
