Sarah Bahari
Kansas State Collegian Each individual possesses the ability to make a positive difference in the environment through daily activities. This is the platform of Students Helping the Environment, a student organization concerned with increasing awareness of the importance of small contributions to making improvements to the environment. Students Helping the Environment, which has been in existence for about one year, has been busy with its first major project, Earth Day, which is Thursday. The group has planned activities for the week, with each day having a different subject and activities designed to inform the public, said Stacy Meredith, co-founder of Students Helping the Environment and senior in geography. There will be a composting demonstration this afternoon. There is a tour scheduled for the Hazardous Household Waste Center in Manhattan at 3 p.m Tuesday, and there will be a recycling forum at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the K-State Student Union. On Earth Day there will be a celebration at 5 p.m. in City Park, and food and drinks will be donated by various restaurants in Manhattan. From 6 to 8 p.m., there will be storytelling, environmental speakers and an open-microphone session where people can share their thoughts and observations. At 8 p.m., there will be music from local bands and musicians.

Sentinel staff writer However, students say much more needs to be done before the campus is truly environmentally responsible. Instead of marching in protest, though, a group of students has spent hours upon hours researching "green" building design, meeting with campus administrators and developing ways to raise ecological awareness among fellow students. The effort is paying off. Last July, the UC Regents, the governing board of all nine UC schools, adopted a systemwide policy calling for "green" buildings and "clean" energy, with a goal of reducing energy consumption by at least 10 percent by 2014. "It’s like riding a wave," said senior Marcia Winslade, 24, who as co-chair of the 3-year-old Student Environmental Center lobbied hard for the policy — and at the expense of activities that typically consume the time of students, like surfing.

The American Heritage Children's Dictionary Books to Build on: A Grade-By-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers (Core Knowledge Series) Advertisement When should environmental education begin - in the third grade? first grade? kindergarten? The answer is even earlier. Environmental education based on life experiences should begin during the very earliest years of life. Such experiences play a critical role in shaping lifelong attitudes, values, and patterns of behavior toward natural environments.
Why Should My Child Learn About the Environment So Early?
The rationale for environmental education during the early childhood years is based on two major premises. First, children must develop a sense of respect and caring for the natural environment during their first few years of life or be at risk for never developing such attitudes. Second, positive interactions with the natural environment are an important part of healthy child development, and these interactions enhance learning and the quality of life over the span of one's lifetime. Children who are close to nature relate to it as a source of wonder, joy, and awe. Wonder rather than books, words, or learning all the facts provides the direction and impetus for environmental education in early childhood. Environmental education during the early years should be based on this sense of wonder and the joy of discovery.

The History of Earth Day First celebration: April 22, 1970 in USA Scope of the event: At the time, it was the largest nationwide demonstration in history; larger than any Vietnam War protest or the march led by Martin Luther King Jr. Background: Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson (former state senator and governor) is universally recognized as the father of Earth Day. Champion of the 1964 Wilderness Act, he drafted the first bill to ban DDT and was far ahead of his time with innovative environmental solutions for his home state and for the nation. Recognizing that his was often an overlooked opinion, he became determined to bring environmental awareness to the public's attention. Taking his cue from successful student group meetings, he formulated a plan of action. He hired Denis Hayes, then a recent graduate of Stanford and Harvard as national coordinator for a major event which was initially called a National Environmental Teach-in. Non-political and non-violent, it was to be a peaceful day of awareness through speeches, gatherings and activities centered around natural resources, the environment and subjects ranging from local waste problems to projects and issues of global impact. Major issues included growing concerns over unregulated use of chemicals and pesticides, nuclear waste and the first critical oil spill from an offshore rig off the California coast. Significant participation:

Staff Writer Students will have the opportunity to express their appreciation of the earth and learn how to preserve its resources during Purdue's upcoming Earth Day 2000. Although the national Earth Day is Saturday, Purdue's Earth Day 2000 will be celebrated on Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m. on Purdue's Memorial Mall. Jessica Spain, a member of the Environmental Action Committee of Purdue Student Government, was in charge of organizing Purdue's Earth Day. She said, "Through the organization, I have learned how to spark people's interests on the issues and to combat apathy within the Purdue community." PSG senator Ryan Allison said, "Purdue's Earth Day is one day of the year that we can get out there and remind people of the importance the environment plays in our everyday lives and how important it is to maintain a clean environment." At 6 p.m. on Monday, The Natural Foods Dinner will be held at the Wesley Foundation. The dinner will be free, and the community will have the opportunity to learn about the effects that their diets have on the environment.

San Jose, CA. A group of fifty immigrant women and men, from low-income communities in San Jose, were honored Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Olinder Community Center for their environmental justice work and commitment to their communities' health and well being. Two hundred community members attended the event to honor these important leaders. Immigrants, like other low-income people and communities of color, are disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution. This ceremony is a time for immigrants to celebrate People's Earth Day, an annual international event that emphasizes the need for people, especially those from marginalized communities, to reclaim the Earth and make it a healthier place for children and families. The community leaders, activists and cultural performers weaved stories about the Earth and the need for a healthy environment into their speeches, dances and song during the celebration. This year's People's Earth Day will hold special significance to the organizers and community members in attendance. Environmental regulations instituted in the U.S. over the last decade are currently being dismantled. This year's Earth Day will be a reaffirmation of peoples' rights to live on a safe and healthy planet.

How A Worldwide Movement Is Challenging The Cult Of Speed

By Carl Honore In Praise Of Slowness traces the history of our increasingly breathless relationship with time, and tackles the consequences and conundrum of living in this accelerated culture of our own creation. Why are we always in such a rush? What is the cure for time-sickness? Is it possible, or even desirable, to slow down? Realizing the price we pay for unrelenting speed, people all over the world are reclaiming their time and slowing down the pace and living happier, more productive, and healthier lives as a result. A Slow revolution is taking place. WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

2002 Earth Day celebration. DEC's long association with youth conservation programs began in the 1930s with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and continues today with several AmeriCorps programs. Through these partnerships, young men and women complete a wide range of conservation service projects, such as watershed protection, trail enhancement, wildlife habitat protection, and public education and outreach. Within DEC, the Division of Public Affairs and Education coordinates our partnerships with AmeriCorps programs. Today's AmeriCorps programs receive federal grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps members serve full time for a five- or ten-month period. The ten-month service generally starts in mid-October, and the five-month positions usually start in April. Some 12 week positions are also available. AmeriCorps members receive a modest stipend and health benefits. Upon successful completion of the program, all SCA members receive an AmeriCorps educational award that can be used for higher education tuition or to repay student loans. Two programs are administered by the Student Conservation Association. The SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps places individuals at DEC facilities, state parks and historic sites in the Hudson River watershed area. SCA AmeriCorps members expand the public's knowledge about the river and its resources. They lead canoe trips, coordinate trail work, develop programs for children and the general public, and participate in special events, such as Earth Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps members get together as a team each month to implement service projects or to receive in-service training. This program is jointly sponsored by DEC and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
