Does the Bible Teach a Young Earth?
By Matt Perman
"On the basis of internal evidence, it is this writer's conviction that yom [the Hebrew word for day] in Genesis one could not have been intended by the Hebrew author to mean a literal twenty-four-hour day," concludes Dr. Gleason Archer, a biblical scholar who is fluent in Hebrew and over 30 related languages, one of the main translators for the New American Standard Bible, and a bold defender of the historicity and authority of the Bible.[1]
Nearly half of Americans, however, believe that the earth was created in six twenty-four-hour days because, they say, the Bible teaches this.[2] The logical implication of this interpretation is that, according to the Bible, the earth must be young. But is this understanding of the creation account required by the text? More importantly, is it true? If it is not true, and the "days" of Genesis are intended to mean "ages" (as Dr. Archer testifies), then the Bible does not teach a young earth but allows for the evidence that the earth is very old.

Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated every year on the same day, April 22. Proposed in 1969 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is an opportunity for citizens to demonstrate their commitment to improving environmental quality. Twenty million Americans participated in the first Earth Day in April 1970 , expressing their support for issues such as resource conservation and environmental quality. During the next decade, legislation such as the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts strengthened federal regulation and protection of the environment. An understanding of the effect that individuals have on their surroundings is vital to environmental literacy. Earth Day is a great occasion to learn more about current environmental issues, participate in local environmental activities , or make a small change around the house . For more on Earth Day, visit these websites: EPA: Earth Day
This page from the US Environmental Protection agency explains how people can celebrate Earth Day at home in the classroom , and in the community . The EPA also offers articles describing the history of Earth Day and a downloadable Earth Day Coloring and Activity Book for younger students.

In the ecoMentors program, we want to promote and support the idea that Earth Day is everyday. Yet on April 22nd, the official Earth Day, individuals, schools and communities around the world celebrate the earth by taking part in community actions, starting new environmental initiatives and celebrating nature. We would like the ecoMentors to join with these international efforts by having a class celebration on or around the actual Earth Day. Click here for more information about Earth Day events. While the activities which they and the class choose for their celebration can vary, we see the Earth Day activity as the culmination and celebration of the environmental work accomplished by the class. The class should be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned through their environmental work and to celebrate their learning. Students could put on a play, hold a fair, make displays about their work or present information learned to the community or to local politicians. Site Navigation Geology's Ability To Teach Us About The Earth By Robert C. Smith II and John H. Barnes
"The present is the key to the past" has been a key concept used by geologists in interpreting their field observations since it was first proposed by the pioneering Scottish geologist James Hutton in 1785. It is a reminder to geologists that, by studying modern geologic processes, we can understand what went on in the past to create the features that we find preserved in ancient rocks. This concept is not much different than the "history repeats itself" concept of historians, who usually deal with events that occurred hundreds of years rather than hundreds of thousands or hundreds of millions of years ago. Taken together, these concepts suggest that Earth will, at times, be a scary place in the future.
But is all well with our mature "Mother Earth"? Not necessarily. Without any help from man, and despite the over 4 billion years that Earth has had to settle down, earthquakes such as those at New Madrid, Mo. (1811, magnitude greater than 7), and Charleston, S.C. (1886, magnitude greater than 6), will continue to occur. They will be infrequent, but even with present technology there will be no warning. At present, we cannot even do a very good job of predicting where east-coast earthquakes will occur.
What does the future hold for an Earth dominated by mankind? There will be more landslides and sinkholes than would otherwise be the case because we have a constant need to rearrange the landscape so that we can construct buildings and highways to accommodate an ever-increasing population. Many of these landslides and sinkholes are preventable, but not all will be prevented. Better news coverage in the electronic era will spread news of sinkhole collapses and call attention to municipalities that employ poor storm-water management plans, thus providing disincentive for further development in such places.

Subtopic: Earth Day Grade levels of mini-unit: Author: Erin Peterson Background Information: For many years, John Muir, John J. Audubon and Henry David Thoreau worked to protect our environment. These men and many others had worked hard for almost 100 years to find ways to guard our earth because many of our natural resources were disappearing. Rachel Carson, a biologist, wrote a book in 1962 Silent Spring that spoke out on pollution. The work of these people, and many others were the beginnings of a need of environmental protection in the United States and also an awareness in other countries around the world. During the Santa Barbara oil spill, in 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin came up with the idea to create an enviromental awareness day. Denis Hayes, a student at Harvard University, was hired to be the coordinator of this national movement. This celebration became known as Earth Day. On a beautiful, spring morning in April, 20,000 people gathered together in Washington D.C. to begin a campaign to save our earth. It was the 22nd of April in 1970 when Earth Day was born. There were several college campuses around the United States where Earth Day supporters met to hold their own campaigns. On April 22, 1970, over 20,000,000 people met to begin their fight to save the planet earth. Americans supported the Earth Day Campaign more than the Vietnam Protests. During Earth Day '70, people all over the nation were working on projects to protect our environment. Projects included: organizing neighborhood clean-ups, and planting trees. In Union Square, demonstrators spoke out on polluters of air, water and noise in an ecology fair. With respect to this outbreak, the government went into action by passing the Clean Air and Water Act and also the Enviromental Protection Agency was founded. After the first Earth Day, Denis Hayes and many others feared that enviromental issues would not become part of the of american way of life, but much to their surprise, activators continued their fight daily to save our environment (Earth Day Resources, pg.1).

    Earth Day 2004
    History
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by former Governor and Senator of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. The first Earth Day in 1970 rallied over 20 million Americans from around the country and on college campuses to get involved in environmental "teach-ins". This event, which was the largest grassroots mobilization in US history, created what has come to be known as the environmental movement. It was out of this event that came the first environmental legislation - the Clean Air and Clean Water acts.
In response to this groundswell of activity in hundreds of US communities, Gaylord Nelson, Bruce Anderson and Claes Noble incorporated Earth Day USA to help facilitate the continuation of the Earth Day process. In doing so, they advanced the environmental agenda to include year-round activities that would "Make Every Day Earth Day".
In 1990, more than 200 million people in 141 countries participated during Earth Day's 20th anniversary. Due in large part to the efforts of hundreds of local organizers, "Earth Day" is now an anticipated annual event. Earth Day observations and celebrations now include all social sectors, nationalities and cultural groups. Earth Day has become perhaps the most prominent catalyst for ongoing environmental education, action and change.
Earth Day celebrations offer an important point of entry to address worldwide environmental concerns as well as the opportunity for communities to focus on their unique environmental problems.

Place a 100 people within this Cubic like room and they will not increase the number of corners anymore than 6 billion people on Earth will increase the 4 corners of Earth.
