But in its short life span, the World Wide Web has become a resource for consumers who want to shop with the planet in mind. In recognition of the thriving green market that has developed in cyberspace — and in honor of Earth Day 2004 on April 22 — here are 10 simple ways to start shopping green online. advertisement
1. Make educated choices. The Web site of national non-profit coopamerica.org not only provides practical tips about buying green, but also posts bulletins about boycotts and exploitative business practices. The current campaign asks consumers to e-mail ExxonMobil to encourage the company to invest in renewable energy. Since 1982, the Washington-based group has educated consumers about social and environmental issues with the ultimate goal of helping “responsible” businesses thrive. “If everyone shifted just 10 percent of their spending to companies with outstanding records on social and environmental issues it would channel $170 billion to building a green economy that puts people and the planet first,” says executive director Alisa Gravitz.

Earth Day: Environmental Milestones A brief history of environmental milestones
by Elissa Haney Earth Day was established in 1970 at a time when social activism was at a high. U.S. senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wis.), recognized a growing environmental concern that had barely been addressed by the legislature . In setting aside April 22 to recognize human impact on the environment, Nelson hoped first and foremost to raise the awareness of politicians.
Nelson certainly achieved his goal. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration, causing voter-hungry politicians to take notice. The overwhelming response helped generate a new political focus on the environment . As that focus has become increasingly global, more people than ever are celebrating Earth Day around the world.

Is there any planet like Earth beyond our solar system? If so, what might it teach us about Earth's past and future? NASA scientists will explore the topic and answer questions from the public during a live webcast on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. Eastern time (11 a.m. to noon Pacific time). The panel will examine the conditions that make Earth a habitable environment and discuss the possibility of Earth-like planets around other stars. The scientists will discuss what the discovery of such planets might teach us about Earth and its environment. The panelists represent the Origins and astrobiology programs at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. They are: Dr. Victoria Meadows, leader of JPL's astrobiology research team, which is exploring the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe
Dr. Rolf Danner, research scientist for JPL's planet-finding missions

30. EEK! - Gaylord Anton Nelson - Father Of Earth Day
Why not have a teachin on the environment? That’s how the idea for earth day was born. He proposed it on the floor of the US Senate.
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/nature/gaylord.htm
Gaylord Anton Nelson
Father of Earth Day
There was a special adventure to being a young boy in northwestern Wisconsin. There was the adventure of exploring a deep green pine forest, crunching noisily through the crisp leaves and pine needles on a sharp fall day, or taking a cool drink from a fast running trout stream or a hidden lake. Gaylord Nelson Gaylord Nelson was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin in 1916. His experiences as a boy growing up in northern Wisconsin helped shape his life-long interest in the environment. Clear Lake offered him the chance to fish, swim, ice skate and explore. His day-to-day outdoor adventures made him curious about how nature works. He tells the story of how, at an early age, he and a friend conducted an experiment. When turtles migrated to a local pond for spring egg-laying, they picked up one of the traveling turtles and placed her in the opposite direction or put her behind a tree to see which way she would go. Without fail, she would turn herself back towards the pond and continue her journey. This interest in nature stayed with him when he left Clear Lake. Nelson received a B.A. degree from San Jose State College in San Jose, California. He returned to his native Wisconsin to attend law school, graduating in 1942. After graduation, he served in the United States Army for 4 years during WWII. He returned to Madison after the war, set up a law practice, and married Carrie Lee Dotson.

Make Earth Day, Everyday
It was the largest demonstration in human history. In the slang of the 1970s, April 22, 1970, was a "happening." More than 20 million people took part. It was the birth of the modern environmental movement. The event was Earth Day. On that special day, 10,000 schools, 2,000 colleges and universities and almost every community in the United States participated in events to celebrate and clean-up the environment. The United States Congress adjourned for Earth Day so that members could attend teach-ins in their districts. All three major TV networks covered the events around the country. When Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin proclaimed April 22, 1970 to be "Earth Day," he gave birth to a historic movement. Since then, each year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. It’s a day for enjoying nature and getting involved in special environmental events. But, our protection of the Earth shouldn’t last just one day. We need to find ways to make every day, Earth Day. Can you think of things that you can do to help the Earth and make Earth Day, every day? Take the

any As far as I can tell, Earth Day today is safe as Kleenex, prone to feel-good psychobabble of no educational value. One of the more spiritual Earth Day events was the 1997 gathering in Dubrovnik of the Round-and-Blue Foundation. Choirs scattered around the globe sang a suitable song, and the participants felt something of the oneness of life on this planet. That is a good thing, and maybe such doings can build up to an impressive worldwide spiritual event. But Earth Day is no longer a teach-in. The political side of Earth Day has faded from its remarkable origin in 1970, during the Nixon administration. Back then, ideas about conservation and environmentalism were vigorously debated, part of a sea change in American consciousness. Businesses and the public had high stakes, and the direction of what was to be the Environmental Protection Agency was the prize.

Earth Day Info
What is Earth Day ?
Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. Earth Day was first launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, and is now celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement.
The first Earth Day involved 20 million participants in teach-ins that addressed decades of environmental pollution. The event inspired the US Congress to pass clean air and clean water acts, and to establish the Environmental Protection Agency to research and monitor environmental issues and enforce environmental laws. Today we continue to push for a safer, cleaner environment. Earth Day is celebrated all over the world in recognition of the progress we have made and in recognition of environmental issues that still need to be addressed. Earth Day with EPA Communities continue to celebrate Earth Day by participating in activities to solve such global issues as air pollution, soil contamination, and global warming. The message of environmental responsibility will be reinforced through the activities and events associated with Earth Day. EPA is dedicated to working with communities to promote environmental responsibility on Earth Day and everyday. Please chose from the links below to see details about Earth Day efforts in your community:
