These are the questions I am most frequently asked. Actually, the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day. I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

Jump Start Recycling Fundraising for Wildlife Jim Peterson of Auburndale Elementary School The students at Auburndale Elementary School, in Auburndale, Wisconsin, were presented with a challenge in the fall of 2002. The nearby Mead Wildlife Area, a 22,000 acre state-run facility, was planning on building an environmental education center to serve schools from all around the area. The state was willing to put up half the money, but the rest had to be raised from private funds. The teachers challenged the students to raise $1,000 toward this goal. Students started with a "Coins for Mead" campaign, collecting change in each classroom. The sixth grade classes chipped in by painting faces for Homecoming, charging 25 to 50 cents per face. Within a month the students had surpassed the original goal and we set our sites higher, with a new goal of $2,500. There were candy sales, bird-feeder sales, a carnival, a garage sale, and many other activities. On Earth Day, the students will present a check to the project manager for almost $3,000! Starting next year our students will be able to visit the center and will be among the first students to utilize this facility which will be providing lessons in environmental responsibility for many years to come.

Recycling is when an object can be shredded, melted or otherwise processed and then turned into new raw material for instance, aluminum cans can be melted down to make more cans, glass can make more glass, cardboard and paper make more coardboard and paper, plastic bags and containers can be turned into other plastic products. This takes some energy (very little for aluminum), but it is a good choice. Reusing is when you find a use for an existing item - like decorating a bag and using it as a gift bag instead of buying wrapping paper; putting leftovers into a clean container from some other food; turning a used box into storage; decorating a can to hold pencils; saving packing peanuts and boxes and using them the next time you need to ship something or give a gift. Giving things in good condition that you no longer need to charity is another good way to reuse things like outgrown clothing or toys. Reusing is often the best way to save resources. This is something to consider year-round, not just around the winter holidays.

WHY THE MARCH EQUINOX IS THE ONLY TRUE EARTH DAY Throughout the many decades of my life previous to my founding of EARTH DAY March 21, 1970, I pondered over how the many differences that confront our world could find a peaceful resolution, instead of being in an almost constant confrontation. My key solution was to focus attention on the most important common ground and the positive values shared by adversaries. National holidays, as well as religious ones, have special days set: a good example of people coming together to peacefully celebrate. And so I, John McConnell, drew attention to a time that is celebrated by the entire world THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING: Nature's moment of the Equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator causing the length of day and night to be equal a state of equilibrium throughout the Earth. The objective was to get a nation-wide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda." - Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day Gaylord Nelson was born on June 4, 1916, the third of four children, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. At the age of fourteen, he organized a campaign to plant trees along all five roads that lead to Clear Lake. After earning a BA degree in 1939 from San Jose State College in California, and an LLB at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1942, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a first lieutenant. After the war, he practiced law back in Wisconsin before entering public service as a state senator in 1948. Ten years later, he was elected Governor of Wisconsin. As governor, he won legislative approval for the Outdoor Recreation Acquisition Program. Contact The Nature Conservancy Declares April 18 - the Sunday before Earth Day - "Take Your Child to Nature Day" Conservancy Calls on All Arizona Residents to Reconnect with Nature this Earth Day and Pass the Conservation Legacy on to the Next Generation Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in the United States 34 years ago, Americans’ concern for and attention to the global environment has grown steadily. But recent studies have shown that today’s children are spending less and less time outdoors and are not experiencing nature first hand. According to a study last year by Hofstra University in Hempstead N.Y. , 71 percent of mothers across the country reported that they played outdoors more often than indoors when they were young, while only 26 percent said their own kids do that today. Video games, television and the internet have replaced walks in the park, wildlife watching, and camping in the wilderness. In honor of this year’s Earth Day, The Nature Conservancy has declared April 18 – the Sunday before Earth Day – as “Take Your Child to Nature Day.” “Earth Day has taught people to be much more aware of environmental issues,” said Steve McCormick, president of The Nature Conservancy. “But many people – especially children – are spending much less time outside. To effectively protect natural habitats, we must learn about them, experience them. We’d like Earth Day to inspire everyone to go outside with their children to explore the natural world around us.”
