All About Earthday (PDF 17K)
By Senator Gaylord Nelson, Founder of Earth Day

What was the purpose of Earth Day? How did it start? These are the questions I am most frequently asked.
Actually, the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.
I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

EARTH DAY: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
By Lee Lawrence
In collaboration with
John McConnell July 3, 1999 “EARTH DAY celebrates the deep-seated and persistent desire of populations around the globe for peace and harmony, which have been disrupted over the years by misguided leaders but never by the people themselves."
George Gallup, Jr. June 30, 1999. The coming of the New Millennium may impel us to examine what remains to be done to improve the quality of life for individuals all over the world. The past need not be prologue. At the closing of the last millennium, 999 A. D., Europe had become poor and backward. There was no maintenance of cities and roads had fallen into ruin. By our standards, life for most Europeans was unimaginably mean, dirty and unhealthy. The impact on Europe of the Fall of the Roman Empire, five centuries earlier, proved to almost wipe out civilization. Nobel Laureate Harold Urey, stated, "We in the older generation have begun to realize the immense changes on the Earth in our lifetime. Due to trains and airlines, we can travel quickly to all parts of the Earth. Due to atomic bombs people all over the earth are in danger. Due to the success of information and medicine we face the possibility of an overpopulated Earth. All of these things are of great concern to all of us. It is time we began to think in terms of a unified Earth. One of the best ways, it seems to me, is to celebrate EARTH DAY, on March 20, 1977 as well as in all the years to come. In this way the people of the Earth can dedicate themselves to understanding these facts, and to intelligently act on them." (From Nobel Laureate Statements supporting Earth Day – United Nations, 1977.)

The History of Earth Day
In 1963, former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying. He wondered why more people weren't trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem. Then, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.) On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn't it great? One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it. See what happens when people care about our world?

- American Heritage Magazine, October 1993 Earth Day was born out of former Senator, Gaylord Nelson's conviction that the declining state of our environment had for too long been a non-issue on our national political stage. He believed that a dramatic event was necessary to focus national attention and dialogue on the environment. Thirty years ago he envisioned a nation-wide "teach-in" on the environment and announced that it would take place in the Spring of 1970. That teach-in became the first Earth Day and an estimated 20 million people from 140 countries participated. The event was pivotal in making the environment a permanent issue in American politics and culture. Over the past thirty years, the observance of Earth Day has grown steadily with more and more people the world over joining together to increase awareness of the Earth and environmental responsibility. In fact, it is estimated that over a half a billion people will participate in the Earth Day celebration. Earth Day also presents an ideal opportunity for educators to increase students' awareness of environmental issues and to teach them ways to protect and conserve our natural resources. There is a vast array of Earth Day resources available on the Internet; however, finding the specific teaching resources you need can be extremely time consuming. Education Planet wants to make it quick and easy for busy educators to find the best of these resources so they can plan a meaningful Earth Day for their students.

"Earth Day is the first holy day ... and is devoted to the
harmony of nature... The celebration offends no historical
calendar, yet it transcends them all."
- Margaret Mead Hello Friend of Planet Earth, Thanks for your interest in exploring in the Earth Day activity "In Balance With Earth." Just imagine how all of life on Earth might be a happier experience if 600 million people this year learned to deal with the underlying causes of our personal, environmental and social disharmony. Our runaway problems are not found in natural systems or nature centered people. They result from industrial society's excessive separation from nature and its disruptive effects on our naturally peaceful thoughts and relationships. Far too often, our efforts to live harmoniously with Earth do not meet their goal. Our estrangement from the natural environment produces apathy, resistance to change and addictive prejudices at all levels. This is an ecologically rooted psychological challenge, a problem that begs psychological solutions. For young or old alike, applied ecopsychology activities address this challenge. For this reason, we invite you to use, teach, and network the activity "In Balance With Earth." It is an Earth connected sensory rediscovery experience. It enables you to create and share moments in nature that let Earth touch you and teach you its balance.

Jim Peterson of Auburndale Elementary School The students at Auburndale Elementary School, in Auburndale, Wisconsin, were presented with a challenge in the fall of 2002. The nearby Mead Wildlife Area, a 22,000 acre state-run facility, was planning on building an environmental education center to serve schools from all around the area. The state was willing to put up half the money, but the rest had to be raised from private funds. The teachers challenged the students to raise $1,000 toward this goal. Students started with a "Coins for Mead" campaign, collecting change in each classroom. The sixth grade classes chipped in by painting faces for Homecoming, charging 25 to 50 cents per face. Within a month the students had surpassed the original goal and we set our sites higher, with a new goal of $2,500. There were candy sales, bird-feeder sales, a carnival, a garage sale, and many other activities. On Earth Day, the students will present a check to the project manager for almost $3,000! Starting next year our students will be able to visit the center and will be among the first students to utilize this facility which will be providing lessons in environmental responsibility for many years to come.

Things to discuss when it comes to saving resources...
Recycling is when an object can be shredded, melted or otherwise processed and then turned into new raw material for instance, aluminum cans can be melted down to make more cans, glass can make more glass, cardboard and paper make more coardboard and paper, plastic bags and containers can be turned into other plastic products. This takes some energy (very little for aluminum), but it is a good choice. Reusing is when you find a use for an existing item - like decorating a bag and using it as a gift bag instead of buying wrapping paper; putting leftovers into a clean container from some other food; turning a used box into storage; decorating a can to hold pencils; saving packing peanuts and boxes and using them the next time you need to ship something or give a gift. Giving things in good condition that you no longer need to charity is another good way to reuse things like outgrown clothing or toys. Reusing is often the best way to save resources. This is something to consider year-round, not just around the winter holidays.

    http://www.wowzone.com/why-ed.htm
WHY THE MARCH EQUINOX IS THE ONLY TRUE EARTH DAY Throughout the many decades of my life previous to my founding of EARTH DAY March 21, 1970, I pondered over how the many differences that confront our world could find a peaceful resolution, instead of being in an almost constant confrontation. My key solution was to focus attention on the most important common ground and the positive values shared by adversaries. National holidays, as well as religious ones, have special days set: a good example of people coming together to peacefully celebrate. And so I, John McConnell, drew attention to a time that is celebrated by the entire world THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING: Nature's moment of the Equinox when the Sun crosses the celestial equator causing the length of day and night to be equal a state of equilibrium throughout the Earth. This is the true EARTH DAY, not because I selected it, but because it originates in the Earth's own rotation and revolution. The first day of Spring, a day that historically has been celebrated by people of every creed and culture is a day worthy of being a holiday of all of Earth's people. The first EARTH DAY, celebrated in the United States, was on March 21, 1970. It has been celebrated each year thereafter at the United Nations, bringing attention to its original purpose: peace, justice and the care of Earth.

NORTH BRUNSWICK — Although the nation celebrates Earth Day today, the township began new environmentally conscious initiatives on Sunday. In conjunction with Earth Day and in an effort to improve the overall quality of life for township residents and visitors, the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services kicked off a series of a new program aimed at cleaning up the community this week. About 30 men and women removed litter and other debris from the jughandle stretch of Route 1 across from the Wal-Mart shopping center on Sunday, Benson said. "The drastic difference their efforts made in the area should encourage all residents and travelers to refrain from tossing litter out of their car windows," Benson said.

"Earth Day achieved what I had hoped for. The objective was to get a nation-wide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda." - Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day Gaylord Nelson was born on June 4, 1916, the third of four children, in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. At the age of fourteen, he organized a campaign to plant trees along all five roads that lead to Clear Lake. After earning a BA degree in 1939 from San Jose State College in California, and an LLB at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1942, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a first lieutenant. After the war, he practiced law back in Wisconsin before entering public service as a state senator in 1948. Ten years later, he was elected Governor of Wisconsin. As governor, he won legislative approval for the Outdoor Recreation Acquisition Program. Financed by a one-cent-per-pack cigarette tax, the program acquired land rights to private parks and wetlands, and paid property owners to preserve the land as wilderness.

    Earth Day
It's been 34 years since the first Earth Day. Since then, dramatic results have been achieved. Shortly after 20 million Americans gathered at the first Earth Day rally in 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency was established, the Clean Air and Clean Water acts were signed into law, and the pesticide DDT was banned. Today, recycling and cleaning up litter is second nature to many Americans, and Earth Day is now celebrated by hundreds of millions of people in more than 180 countries. On Earth Day, April 22, renew your connection to nature by visiting a Nature Conservancy preserve or your favorite natural place. With more than 1,400 Nature Conservancy preserves across the country, Americans can easily visit, learn about, and reconnect with their local natural habitats.
Click on the map to find out where you can go to reconnect with nature.

Earth Day founder former Sen. Gaylord Nelson, who now serves as a counselor with The Wilderness Society, said, "I'm very proud that Earth Day proved a turning point in how Americans view and interact with the world's environment. But we can't just rely on old-timers like me. We must pass on the conservation legacy to the next generation."

The Nature Conservancy Declares April 18 - the Sunday before Earth Day - "Take Your Child to Nature Day"
Conservancy Calls on All Arizona Residents to Reconnect with Nature this Earth Day and Pass the Conservation Legacy on to the Next Generation Since the first Earth Day was celebrated in the United States 34 years ago, Americans’ concern for and attention to the global environment has grown steadily. But recent studies have shown that today’s children are spending less and less time outdoors and are not experiencing nature first hand. According to a study last year by Hofstra University in Hempstead N.Y. , 71 percent of mothers across the country reported that they played outdoors more often than indoors when they were young, while only 26 percent said their own kids do that today. Video games, television and the internet have replaced walks in the park, wildlife watching, and camping in the wilderness. In honor of this year’s Earth Day, The Nature Conservancy has declared April 18 – the Sunday before Earth Day – as “Take Your Child to Nature Day.” “Earth Day has taught people to be much more aware of environmental issues,” said Steve McCormick, president of The Nature Conservancy. “But many people – especially children – are spending much less time outside. To effectively protect natural habitats, we must learn about them, experience them. We’d like Earth Day to inspire everyone to go outside with their children to explore the natural world around us.”
