Our booth was staffed by Junior Docents who did a wonderful job helping kids of all ages with the arts and crafts we offered. This year we featured finger puppet-making. Visitors could made all kinds of desert critters - owls, bats, butterflies and more. In addition to crafts, we were lucky to have Lollipop Dolly come to paint the faces of our Coati Kids. This was not just small time cheek designs. We are talking full face (and hand) paint which together with ears and tails completed our costume for becoming a troop of coatis to march in the Earth Day Parade. Finally the parade began. Trees clean the air, provide wildlife habitat, prevent soil erosion and even save energy. In Tent B, see Keep Indianapolis Beautiful for a Norway Spruce sapling, then visit IPL for a flowering crab apple tree. While there, see the Indiana Organic Gardeners Association for ideas on gardening with native plants and organic methods. Pick up a free Red Bud or Flowering Dogwood tree in Tent D from the Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management and Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, and learn how you can protect our wetlands, water, air, land and wildlife. Find out how a license plate can help preserve Indiana's wild lands. Kids can wish Smokey Bear a happy 60th birthday with a big bear hug at the IDNR booth. Water, water everywhere

EARTH DAY HISTORY
The following proposal was submitted to Peter Tamaris on October 3, 1969. He
headed the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and had requested John McConnell,
the originator of the idea, to write this proposal. The name "Earth Day" was not used
before this by anyone who has come forward with documented evidence.
The Board of Supervisors proceeded with approval and Mayor George Christopher
issued the proclamation which inaugurated the first Earth Day. A few other cities
in Northern California did the same.
PROPOSED EARTH DAY RESOLUTION

Question 1:
You are the one who first came up with the idea and name for Earth Day. Could you tell us what inspired you, and what that first Earth Day (March 20, 1970) in San Francisco was like?
Answer: I have had a sense of mission since my early youth. The way I thought and the experiences I had all led, step by step, to my vision of Earth Day a global holiday for the whole planet.

Potting Soil
Seeds
Take the plastic scoop from laundry detergent (wash it) and glue on each side towards the handle the plastic lid off a gallon milk jug. It makes a little wheelbarrow. . Next add potting soil and let the kids plant seeds in it. I always plant either grass seeds or beans because they grow so fast.
Growth in the Room
Make terrariums and plant seeds. Have flowers and plants growing in the classroom or home. This really brightens up a place! Many containers can be recycled and made into beautiful planters for growing seeds or repotting plants. Children can collect milk cartons, old pots, and a variety of containers.
Earthday Project using Grocery Bags
Grocery Store Bags Contact a nearby grocery store and offer to have your students decorate a hundred or two paper bags with a simple Earth Day design. (eg. stamp green handprints all over the bags and place a saying on it ) Then make a large poster to put up in the store to identify your class, and perhaps offer a small tabletop Earth Day display. Earth Day is April 22. Parents will LOVE going to the store and getting the bags! Be sure, however, to remind children not to place personal information on the bags (name, address, phone #, etc.) Earthday Activities at Kid Domain.com

Earth Day Art
By Brenda B. Covert Miss Fisher runs the after-school program. She stands at her desk as the children sit down at the tables. After they are seated, she will give them a project to do. Lucia likes drawing and making crafts. What will Miss Fisher have them do today?
Lucia chooses a seat next to her friends Isabel and Carlos. Miss Fisher passes out butter tub lids. Carlos rolls his on the table. Isabel pretends that her lid is a cookie. She bites it, and Lucia laughs. What are they going to do with the lids?
Miss Fisher passes out paper clips. Each child gets one. Carlos takes three and makes a chain. Isabel and Lucia want him to give them their clips. Why do they need paper clips?
Lucia watches Miss Fisher put big bottles of glue on each table. The glue is not white. Some of it is blue. Other bottles are green. What will they do with green and blue glue?
