Stanbridge Earls is an independent, co-educational, boarding and day school with around 190 pupils between eleven and eighteen years of age.
The school has been a leader in the field of specific learning difficulties since 1963; this fits easily into our philosophy of developing every pupil's ability to the full. We are however, much more than just a school for special needs because every pupil wishing for a smaller, caring environment will do well here. Click here to read more about the school.
A complete national curriculum Special needs catered for A full range of facilities Extracurricular activities (ISI Inspector's report March 2000) For a school of our size, the range of academic subjects and recreational activities is remarkable. By any standards Stanbridge Earls is an unusual school. Because every pupil is important to us, no effort is spared to raise the expectations of all.

"Reading disabilities are the most understood and effectively corrected learning disability. If children who are dyslexic get effective instruction early and intensively in kindergarten, first, and second grades they can make significant gains in learning to read at grade level. If help is delayed until third grade they will rarely catch up with their peers - 75% of the children who were poor readers in the 3rd grade remained poor readers in the 9th grade and could not read well when they became adults. If parents suspect that their child has dyslexia, the sooner they act on their suspicions, the better it will be for their child."
Read What Every Parent Should Know About Dyslexia
"Researchers have developed tests to administer to children in the early grades that will identify students who are at risk of reading failure. These tests can distinguish, with 92% accuracy, those children who will read below the 20th percentile at the end of second grade. These tests take as little as 10 to 15 minutes per child, and can be administered by classroom teachers."

Teaching Methods Multi-sensory teaching methods Studies from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development have shown that for children with difficulties learning to read, a multi-sensory teaching method is the most effective teaching method. This is especially crucial to teach a dyslexic child. But what does it mean? More Confidence building The majority of children with dyslexia have come to the conclusion that they are stupid! In any school in any week of the year a dyslexic child experiences a huge amount of failure. Why can't he read and spell? He must be dumb, thick, stupid. It's the conclusion that anyone would reach in similar circumstances, and it badly needs changing before any corrective teaching is going to be effective. Why is dyslexia a gift?
Dyslexic people are visual, multi-dimensional thinkers. We are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning. Because we think in pictures, it is sometimes hard for us to understand letters, numbers, symbols, and written words. We can learn to read, write and study efficiently when we use methods geared to our unique learning style.

Dr. Debby Zambo describes how, with sound, scientific facts, children with dyslexia can build a build better, more accurate conception of themselves and their disability. Without it they rely on personal experiences and put-downs from their peers. Conceptions built from scientific facts provide empowerment, understanding, and self-esteem. Read on

178. Dyslexia Research Institute
Woodland Hall Academy, Tallahassee, Florida organization providing diagnostic testing, academic and tutorial programs, advocacy and adult education.
http://www.dyslexia-add.org/
Since 1975, the goal of the Dyslexia Research Institute, Inc. has been to change the perception of learning differences, specifically in the area of dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). With proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics and individuals with ADD become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. They may take their place alongside other dyslexics/ADDs, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Nelson Rockefeller. Ten to fifteen percent of the US population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every one hundred dyslexics are recognized and receive assistance. Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorders are also dyslexic, however, their learning and language differences are often unrecognized because only the behavioral aspects of ADD are addressed. Without the proper diagnosis and help, many of these dyslexics and ADD individuals are only functionally literate, and are part of the forty-four million adults with only the lowest level of literacy. This limits their ability to find jobs and function independently within their communities. The Dyslexia Research Institute mission is to change these statistics by providing appropriate identification and training.

Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person’s ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.
