I think academics should be stressed at all levels. There's a philosophy of learning through play, and there's a value in that, and there's a place for it, but you have to make sure children have the spectrum of skills needed for the first grade. At a time when many educators considered kindergarten little more than "child's play," Mary Hailes, the 2000 recipient of the Bill Ellis Teacher Preparation Award, saw great opportunity. Hailes, who has been teaching at Seaton Elementary School in Washington, DC, for more than three decades, says her experience teaching first and second graders during her 20s made her realize that many kindergarten teachers weren't preparing their students for the next grade, thus creating a learning gap that only widened in subsequent years.

Abstract Many people have difficulty comprehending that a child can be gifted and also have learning disabilities. As a result, children with special needs that result from both their high abilities and their learning problems are rarely identified and are often poorly served. This article explores the current policies and practices with regard to defining, identifying, and educating this population. Recommendations are included that would help ensure that students who are gifted and have learning disabilities receive the intervention needed to help them achieve their full potential. When educators first began describing children who showed evidence of having a learning disability (LD) yet also appeared to be gifted, many viewed this as contradictory. The stereotype that had prevailed since Terman's (1925) time was that gifted children score uniformly high on intelligence tests and perform well in school. How could a child be considered gifted who has serious enough learning problems to be characterized as having a learning disability? In recent years, the concept of giftedness and learning disabilities occurring concomitantly in the same individual has become commonly accepted. Several books have been written on the subject, numerous articles have appeared in journals, and most educational conferences focusing on either learning disabilities or giftedness include at least one presentation on the dual exceptionality. We appear to have reached an understanding that high ability and learning problems can both be present in the same individual. Nonetheless, empirical research on the characteristics and needs of this population has been limited, and relatively few students with LD who are gifted are identified as such or given special services. In this review, we examine some of the theoretical arguments, regulations, and educational practices that affect students with LD who are gifted.

Home More Info News Calendar Catalog ... Contact T he Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) is a nonprofit organization serving children and adults with dyslexia. We envision a new world for children and adults with dyslexia: a world in which they feel good about themselves and look forward to the future with hope and confidence; a world in which they receive the kind of instruction they need, in a nurturing environment; a world in which they are understood and encouraged to develop their potential; and a world in which they can participate fully in the work place and in their communities. MDI is committed to bringing about this new world. Estimates of the number of persons with dyslexia in the United States range from under two percent to over ten percent of the population. While much research has been done, thousands of articles have been written and successful teaching strategies have been in use for over 60 years, ignorance continues to be the number one enemy of dyslexia. In response, MDI has presented hundreds of public awareness programs throughout the state on what dyslexia is and what can be done about it. MDI maintains an information hotline at 517-485-4000 and free information is provided. A newsletter

This is a site on learning disabilities. It consists of information and articles on deficits in reading, language and math.
Dys means deficit , and is used in words like dyslexia (reading deficit), dysphasia (language deficit) and dyscalculia (math ability deficit).
Living with deficits of the kind this site talks about means living with a learning handicap. UN's Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities read:
"States should recognize the principle of equal primary, secondary and tertiary educational opportunities for children, youth and adults with disabilities, in integrated settings. They should ensure that the education of persons with disabilities is an integral part of the educational system."
If we are to fullfill these requirements, that most countries have ratified, we have to change our ways of teaching children with these kinds of disabilities, in order to offer them the same possibilities in regard to education and fullfilling adult lives as non-disabled children have.

What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a difficulty in learning to read despite traditional instruction, average intelligence, and an adequate opportunity to learn. It is an impairment in the brain's ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language. Dyslexia does not result from vision or hearing problems. It is not due to mental retardation, brain damage , or a lack of intelligence. Dyslexia can go undetected in the early grades of schooling. The child can become frustrated by the difficulty in learning to read, and other problems can arise that disguise dyslexia. The child may show signs of depression and low self esteem. Behavior problems at home as well as at school are frequently seen. The child may become unmotivated and develop a dislike for school. The child's success in school may be jeopardized if the problem remains untreated. What causes dyslexia?
