UNLOCKING ANTHONY More in this special report: Trouble finding help Common signs of dyslexia Helpful resources Photo gallery, timeline, more.... It's where he's most at home. There are no words to trip him up, no spelling test terrors. No lonely lunch breaks. No label of mentally retarded. Wearing an orange T-shirt and baggy shorts, Anthony sweats in the late summer sun. Ed Duncan winces as he watches his son's shot roll off the rim. "Oh, you gotta make those, Antonio," he says. "You're killing me!" Inside, Enid Duncan is preparing a birthday dinner for Anthony, her youngest. She's gone all out, decorating the suburban split-level with a basketball theme. The table is set with paper plates and napkins adorned with basketballs. Enid even managed to find a basketball piñata. Anthony's 15-year-old brother, E.J., and his 16-year-old sister, Angelica, are there. So are cousins, uncles and grandparents.

The Infinite Mind: Dyslexia Week of June 27, 2001 Listen to this program now As many as 1 in 7 American children are affected to some degree by dyslexia, which disables language skills but often bestows special abilities in the visual and spatial realm. This program explores what dyslexia is, and what it is not, with guests including author and producer Stephen J. Cannell Thomas Viall of the International Dyslexia Association, Yale researcher Dr. Sally Shaywitz , Toronto entrepreneur Jay Mandarino , author Thomas G. West , virtual reality pioneer Daniel Sandin , children's author Jeanne Betancourt and her daughter, filmmaker Nicole Betancourt.
The program begins with commentary from host Dr. Fred Goodwin , who observes that advances in neuroscience have made it clear that dyslexia is a wiring glitch in the brain, and that it is wrong to assume that dyslexic children are stupid or slow. Next, we hear from children's author

Washington, D.C. 20001 Media Archives Real Video: Morning Session Luncheon Keynote Afternoon Session Real Audio: Morning Session Luncheon Keynote Afternoon Session This spring, the 108th Congress prepares to reauthorize the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act. Since its passage in 1975, IDEA has been plagued with problems including an adversarial atmosphere, skyrocketing costs, unequal treatment of affluent and low-income children, an excessive focus on bureaucratic processes, and poor academic results. This year, special education experts are engaged in an energetic debate about the causes of and solutions to various problems in special education. Can school choice for disabled children form part of a policy solution to the problems facing special ed? What kind of school choice would work best? Which problems might be solved through a policy emphasizing choice? How does Florida’s McKay Scholarship Program for disabled children work, and what are its results so far? What are the limitations of school choice as a policy solution?

St Laurence School Governors - Annual Report
Special Educational Needs
St Laurence continues to enable students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to access their education in line with our SEN policy. That policy states that pupils with special educational needs will be given particular consideration as the school seeks to encourage students to be enthusiastic, confident, responsible, successful and intellectually curious lifelong learners. Our policy provides for students with special needs to be integrated as fully as possible into the educational and social life of the school and for all staff to be trained and supported in meeting their needs. In the light of new Wiltshire LEA guidelines, the register of students with SEN now totals 56. All staff within St Laurence are responsible for providing the appropriate support for children currently on the register and for identifying pupils whose needs have not yet been recognised. St Laurence welcomes the chance to provide an equal opportunity for any disabled student. We ensure that students are included in all aspects of education and are not prevented from joining school trips, provided health and safety considerations are met.
