Academic Interventions for Children with Dyslexia Who Have Phonological Core Deficits. ERIC Digest E539.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC OVERVIEW Approximately 3% to 6% of all school-aged children are believed to have developmental reading disabilities, or dyslexia. In fact, almost 50% of children receiving special education have learning disabilities, and dyslexia is the most prevalent form. Consequently dyslexia has been given considerable attention by researchers and extensive literature exists on instruction and remediation methods.
DEFINITION
Phonological core deficits entail difficulty making use of phonological information when processing written and oral language. The major components of phonological deficits involve phonemic awareness, sound-symbol relations, and storage and retrieval of phonological information in memory. Problems with phonemic awareness are most prevalent and can coexist with difficulties in storage and retrieval among children with dyslexia who have phonological deficits.

Second Annual Texas Dyslexia Conference, November 3-4, 2003, DoubleTree Hotel, Austin, Texas. Great Information on reading disorders and the Texas Dyslexia Law!! In early November, the DoubleTree Hotel will again be the gathering place for the Second Annual Texas Dyslexia Conference. If you are an educator involved with students with reading disorders, this is your event. We’re planning a great conference, with top notch general sessions, interesting breakouts, fun door prizes and all of the camaraderie and information you expect from CESD. The Texas Dyslexia Law and The Dyslexia Handbook: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders, or “Purple Book,” create special duties and procedures for the identification, evaluation, and placement of students with dyslexia. This Conference will help you understand the state and federal law requirements and put all of the pieces together for an effective dyslexia program. The primary cause is dyslexia or one of its many variations, such as ADD or dysgraphia. Today's educational methods are limited when it comes to teaching basic literacy skills to students who have problems with reading, and writing and math. The school system is stacked against dyslexics from the start, because they are "real world" thinkers, using mainly pictures and concepts instead of mental sentences. They require special training to master the basics of written language easily. This doesn't mean they are stupid. Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Edison, Churchill, Walt Disney, Whoopi Goldberg and Greg Louganis were considered "dummies" during their early years of school. They didn't suffer from learning disability, but teaching disability. Many teachers just don't know the right methods for presenting information in a form dyslexic and ADD children can assimilate. As a result, these children may be warehoused in "special ed" classes. The subsequent loss of self-esteem triggers the syndrome that makes dyslexia worse. Stress, confusion and heavy concentration only increase perceptual and attention problems. The harder a dyslexic struggles, the more difficult reading becomes.

What is word blindness? [February 8, 1999] I have a 2nd grade boy who has been diagnosed with severe dyslexia. The doctor described his dyslexia as "Pure Word Blindness." I have not heard this term before. I have consulted with several special ed teachers, as well as our psychologist. No one seems to have heard of this form of dyslexia. Could you explain this term to me? As a special ed teacher, I am looking for strategies that will work for him. He does not seem to catch on to phonics, nor a sight word approach. Lisa G., via email. A. 'Word blindness' is an old-fashioned term used to mean that your son is unable to recognize and understand words that he sees. This was the term first used to describe dyslexia when it was first described by doctors about one hundred years ago. Your doctor is probably using it to mean that your son can not remember the order and sequence of letters in a word from one time to the next. Thus, he could be drilled for hours on an easy word, but the next time he saw the word would not recognize it. In our experience, this apparent severe dyslexia is caused by disorientation, which for dyslexic people means that they have an innacurate perception of the words. That is, they might see the letters of the words jumbled around in all sorts of different ways. There is no way that a dyslexic person who suffers from this sort of disorientation can ever remember a word, because the word seems different every time they look at it.

Under the threat of losing millions of dollars in federal aid, New Jersey this week said it would send inspectors to two dozen large school systems next year to ensure that they provide adequate special-education programs. There also will be hundreds more in-depth inspections in coming years, officials said. And they plan to urge the state's poorer districts to include disabled children in mainstream classes. The initiative comes two months after a federal report said New Jersey had allowed schools to ignore special-education laws and denied children the services they needed. The U.S. Department of Education threatened to withhold $130 million in aid if the state did not act. Education Commissioner David Hespe said the plan would lead to dramatic improvement in special-education programs. But one advocate for disabled students, Diana Autin, who heads the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, said the state plan did not go far enough. "Parts are promising, but it's not going to address all of the [problems]," she said.

In a harsh indictment of state special education programs, the U.S. government says New Jersey has allowed local schools to ignore federal mandates and is failing to protect the rights of disabled children. In a 17-page report, the U.S. Department of Education has given New Jersey until next month to require schools to include more disabled children in mainstream classes and improve its oversight of local programs. The state risks losing $130 million in aid if it does not comply. "Serious deficiencies have been allowed to exist for a number of years," the report says. "The state must take action to ensure that the state's long-standing, serious non-compliance is effectively and promptly corrected." The report cites numerous instances in which the four districts it inspected in June are flouting the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The report is critical of the state for failing to police these and other schools adequately. For instance, the report notes that Camden schools placed children in separate special education classes merely because they were performing below grade level. Special education is meant for children with physical or mental disabilities, not for those only in need of remediation.
