Have you been looking around the Web, and can't find what you want
    concerning special education Then try......

As a special educator I understand the value of information resources concerning special education. With this in mind, I have created the SPECIAL EDges page in hopes that it will bea place that will be useful for educators, parents and anyone else who deals with special needs students. The page is made up of various links to SPED resources that I have found helpful.
I've also included my school (RussellCounty High School) , my peer tutoring group, and an assortment of other things I consider interesting and fun. This Page is new and I am currently learning the ropes of making and maintaining a website, so please have some patience and understanding.(Ever heard that before?).

Learning Challenges may be Life Challenges.
Some students are steady turtles, whose short legs bear heavy shells; others are hares who could run swiftbut drift. Yet the most disruptive scholars can also be the most productive adults: scientists (Darwin, Einstein), entrepreneurs (Hearst, Rockefeller), inventors (Edison, Wright), statesmen (Winston Churchill), and artists (Earnest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong, Helen Keller). Frequently creative, often gifted , these students may acquire talented educators to help become the "Spark plugs of our society, the shakers and movers, the people who bring about revolution and change." (Thom Hartmann, ADD: A Different Perception ) Students with mental or physical learning challenges may obtain mentors to help them race alongside competitors in professional society. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), frequently accompanied by hyperactivity (ADHD), can be seen as a set of behavioral traits which makes students unavailable to learn: students may be distractible, disorganized, bored or intense, present-minded, self-centered, reckless, or angry. Roughly three to ten percent of people, mostly males, display ADD traits. Thirty percent of these people, regrettably, will become disturbed adults who trouble authorities.

Question
child 7.5years old in 2nd grade at public school.
Testing at parental request at 6.4 years of age while in 1st grade and struggling to learn to read. Testing confirmed specific learning difficulties in reading, math calculations and spelling. IEP developed in March 2003 with pull out of general classroom for dailey small group instruction in reading utilizing the Wilson method. Taught by Special ed teacher. Some progress made over this past year but very slow and requiring great effort and time. Child very aware of reading ability and is becomming very frustrated. Testing comfirmed high IQ. Child very motivated to improve reading skills. We question if the correct approach is being utilized for our child? also if small group 4-8 children is still too big...wilson method is provided 45min dailey. Have and are still considering Private Carroll school for language based disorders as it looks positive and promising. Cost of yearly tuition is holding up back at this point. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. As parents we continually read

ADD/ADHD
Vision, Learning and Dyslexia
A joint organizational policy statement of the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association Many children and adults continue to struggle with learning in the classroom and the workplace. Advances in information technology, its expanding necessity, and its accessibility are placing greater demands on people for efficient learning and information processing. Learning is accomplished through complex and interrelated processes, one of which is vision. Determining the relationships between vision and learning involves more than evaluating eye health and visual acuity (clarity of sight). Problems in identifying and treating people with learning-related vision problems arise when such a limited definition of vision is employed. This policy statement addresses these issues, which are important to individuals who have learning-related vision problems (such as dyslexia), their families, their teachers, the educational system and society. Policy Statement People at risk for learning-related vision problems should receive a comprehensive optometric evaluation. This evaluation should be conducted as part of a multidisciplinary approach in which all appropriate areas of function are evaluated and managed.
