Just how pervasive is the American problem of unmastered basic and advanced academic skills? What are the consequences for those who fall short? What impact do the academic "have-nots" have on modern American culture? What applications of available technology, within the typical classroom, can facilitate the acquisition of basic and advanced academic skills? What laws and government initiatives drive this process? Specifically, what researched technological solutions successfully overcome the learning challenges experienced by dyslexic students? How can employment of technological solutions result in practical, fiscally responsible, compliance with the federal education and disability rights laws concerning people with "specific learning disabilities (SLDs)?" Who are the 11% of all U.S. students, aged 16-24, who dropout of school? (NCES 1997, 3) Who are the 92.6% of 17 year-olds who graduate without math proficiency in multi-step problem solving and algebra? (NCES 1997, 123-124) Who are the 21% of American adults who cannot read a simple paragraph, or the 22% who cannot perform simple arithmetic? (NCES 1997, 416)

ESR's mission is to make teaching social responsibility a core practice in education so that young people develop the convictions and skills needed to shape a safe, sustainable, democratic, and just world. In the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center and elsewhere, we've issued a call to transform "Crisis into Community," a guide to assist Talking to Children About Violence and Other Sensitive and Complex Issues in the World (Newly updated on March 23, 2003), and a brand new sequel to that guide, "Responding to Violent Events by Building Community: Action Ideas for Students and Schools." Plus, we've added a set of free lessons customized to help educators and students discuss and understand the attacks of September 11th, war, peace, conflict, retaliation, prejudice, discrimination, propaganda, and a range of divergent points of view.

AutismEducators Yahoo Group This group is open to practitioners involved in the education of children with ASD who share two perspectives: firstly, that the world-view of people with autism is one that deserves to be respected and valued; and secondly, that no single teaching approach or technique is appropriate for teaching most or all children with ASD. The aim is to exchange practical teaching ideas and experiences. Parents, professionals and people with ASD sharing these views and with a genuine interest in the education of children with ASD are welcome to join.
