What is Dyslexia?
'Dys' means 'difficulty' and 'lexia 'means 'words'. Dyslexia is a disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. It is one type of specific learning disability that affects a person's ability to read. A Dyslexic learns at his/her own level and pace, and typically excels in one or more other areaa. Some of their experiences include difficulties with concentration, perception, memory, verbal skills, abstract reasoning, hand-eye coordination, social adjustment (low self-esteem is a commonly observed behavioral characteristic), poor grades, and underachievement. Often, people with Dyslexia are considered to be lazy, rebellious, class clowns, unmotivated, misfits, or of low intelligence. These misconceptions, without understanding dyslexia's effect on the person's life, lead to rejection, isolation, feelings of inferiority, discouragement, and low self-esteem. "Reading disabilities are the most understood and effectively corrected learning disability. If children who are dyslexic get effective instruction early and intensively in kindergarten, first, and second grades they can make significant gains in learning to read at grade level. If help is delayed until third grade they will rarely catch up with their peers - 75% of the children who were poor readers in the 3rd grade remained poor readers in the 9th grade and could not read well when they became adults. If parents suspect that their child has dyslexia, the sooner they act on their suspicions, the better it will be for their child."
Read What Every Parent Should Know About Dyslexia
"Researchers have developed tests to administer to children in the early grades that will identify students who are at risk of reading failure. These tests can distinguish, with 92% accuracy, those children who will read below the 20th percentile at the end of second grade. These tests take as little as 10 to 15 minutes per child, and can be administered by classroom teachers."

http://www.greenwoodinstitute.org/resources/resindex.html
This resource is provided by The Greenwood School , a pre-preparatory boarding school for boys with dyslexia and related language disorders, and The Greenwood Institute , offering teacher training and home schooling support programs for teachers and parents of students with dyslexia and related language disorders. In our modern society, the ability to read is a vital skill to have for success in life.
  • The child or adult who cannot read fluently will be excluded from nearly every available outlet for personal and professional fulfillment.
  • At the same time, there is no area in the educational system that is more dominated by ignorance, confusion and controversy.
Why?
  • There is a wide gulf between what reading researchers have established as scientific evidence of the causes of language disorders and the responsive practices of the majority of education systems which train teachers.
  • "Given the importance of reading to so many young lives, not to include the discoveries on reading disabilities into teacher training on all levels constitutes educational malpractice."

Dyslexia
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a difficulty in learning to read despite traditional instruction, average intelligence, and an adequate opportunity to learn. It is an impairment in the brain's ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language. It does not result from vision or hearing problems. It is not due to mental retardation, brain damage, or a lack of intelligence. Dyslexia can go undetected in the early grades of schooling. The child can become frustrated by the difficulty in learning to read, and other problems can arise that disguise dyslexia. The child may show signs of depression and low self esteem. Behavior problems at home as well as at school are frequently seen. The child may become unmotivated and develop a dislike for school. The child's success in school may be jeopardized if the problem remains untreated. What causes dyslexia?
