Dr. Debby Zambo describes how, with sound, scientific facts, children with dyslexia can build a build better, more accurate conception of themselves and their disability. Without it they rely on personal experiences and put-downs from their peers. Conceptions built from scientific facts provide empowerment, understanding, and self-esteem. Read on

About
(A FREE OnLine Book) Developmental dyslexia is a condition related to poor reading. Children with dyslexia have difficulty learning to read due to one or more information processing problems such as visual perceptual or auditory perceptual deficits. Many but not all children with dyslexia have difficulty with reversals of numbers, letters or words. New research points the way to specific methods of instruction that can help anyone learn to read well no matter what the underlying problem may be. Following the links will provide interesting new information as well as extremely effective solutions for all types of reading problems including developmental dyslexia.

PHIL PONCE: Now, there's been new research that people with dyslexia actually have different patterns of brain activity than people who are good readers. To explain those findings and their implications, we're joined by Dr. Sally Shaywitz, lead author of the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences DR. SALLY SHAYWITZ: Well, since dyslexia was first described over a hundred years ago, we've learned a great deal about reading and reading difficulties, in particular, we've learned that in order to learn to read a child must develop an awareness that the spoken word is made of smaller units of sounds, and that letters represents these sounds. Based on this knowledge, we examined two groups of people: a group of good readers and a group of dyslexia readers. And we found significant differences in brain activation patterns as each of these individuals performed a series of reading tasks.

Not all individuals with dyslexia have problems with mathematics, but many do. There are those who have a good memory for sequences and can execute procedures in a "recipe" style, i.e., step-by-step. They are able to remember formulas, but may not understand why the formula makes sense. They prefer to do paper and pencil tasks and are attentive to the details, but do not see the big picture. Then, there are those who see the big picture and have insight into the patterns of mathematics, but are poor at computation and have problems with remembering step-by-step procedures. They also understand mathematical concepts and like to solve problems mentally and quickly, yet their answers may be inaccurate. These individuals may have difficulty in verbalizing and explaining their answers. Too frequently and too readily, individuals with dyslexia who have difficulty with mathematics are misdiagnosed as having dyscalculia - literally trouble with calculating, a neurologically based disability. True dyscalculia is rare (Steeves, 1983). We know that for individuals with dyslexia, learning mathematical concepts and vocabulary and the ability to use mathematical symbols can be impeded by problems similar to those that interfered with their acquisition of the written language (Ansara, 1973).

Dyslexia and taking notes

As a student with dyslexia at college or university, you may have trouble with note-taking. Draw a line down a sheet of paper, with one-third of the page on the left and two-thirds of the page on the right.
Write the main idea of each paragraph on the left side. List details on the right side of the page. The two-column note-taking method visually separates information into main ideas and details. More Dyslexia and concentration The main barriers to concentrating are boredom, anxiety and day-dreaming. To improve our concentration skills we need to counteract these barriers.

http://www.tomatis.com/English/Articles/dyslexia.htm
Dyslexia: What is it?
If you look up the word dyslexia in the dictionary, you’ll find that it is derived from the Greek word “dys” (meaning poor or inadequate) plus “lexis” (words or language). Perhaps you know someone with dyslexia. If so, you probably know one of the common problems they have is transposing letters or numbers. These problems can occur in listening, writing, reading, spelling or handwriting. In other words, dyslexic people process language poorly, but that doesn’t mean they aren't intelligent. Dyslexia is not related to low intelligence. Dyslexia is a unique mind set that is often gifted and productive, but learns differently than other minds. In fact some of the most brilliant minds of our time have been known to have dyslexia: Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, Mozart and John Lennon to mention only a few. There are people with dyslexia in many types of highly respected careers such as: Walt Disney, Tom Cruise, Danny Glover, Cher, Magic Johnson

What is Dyslexia?
"Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge."
