Programming Languages
Alan Perlis once said: "A language that doesn't affect the way you think about programming, is not worth knowing" Topics within this page Object-Oriented Languages Documentation Generator Tools Functional Languages Free Implementations ... XML-related Languages (XSLT etc.) The Open Directory Project has lots of programming language information For examples of programming in 200+ different languages, check out Tim Robinson's 99 Bottles of Beer page. The Dylan version is nice, but make sure you check out all the C++ versions too! The template version is amazing! More programming language comparisons, including employer demand, are available at http://www.pixeldate.com/dev /comparison/
Object-Oriented Languages
The Cetus Team maintains a large collection of links about most object-oriented languages. One of my favourite object-oriented languages is Cecil , by Craig Chambers. It is a multiple-dispatch language that supports both exploratory untyped programming and large-scale statically-typed programming. It includes some new and very expressive ideas (see the paper "Predicate Dispatching: A Unified Theory of Dispatch" by Michael Ernst, Craig Kaplan and Craig Chambers). Cecil is quite similar to the theoretical language that I developed in my

657.313: Programming Languages
The Exam: will have similar structure to the last few years: 25 multiple choice questions, followed by three long answer questions (25% each), covering all the topics we have studied. Here is a copy of the 2000 exam for you to practice on ( in postscript, and in pdf format). Note that questions 23-25 and the Starlog question are not relevant this year (but CLP will be). The main goal of this course is to explore the rich variety of available programming languages, including object-oriented, functional and logic programming languages. Several weeks will be spent on each of these three paradigms, as well as some time on general issues such as the history and future of programming languages, implementation and semantics. The course outline is available online. In programming assignments, we will use Dylan (a new dynamic object-oriented language), Haskell and Eclipse Prolog The internal assessment (66%) consists of five assignments:
  • Dylan/C++ Language Comparison (Group Report) (10%)
  • Ecology Simulator in Dylan

    What's the Future of Dylan?
February 1996 Core Technologies / What's the Future of Dylan?
It's an expressive object-oriented language, but Dylan might have spent too much time out on Highway 61
Dick Pountain The saga of Apple's Dylan language begins in the mid-'80s, when object-orientation was only just moving into the mainstream and C++ did not have the mindshare it does today. Advanced thinkers at Apple decided that the new Macintosh interface deserved a truly high-level programming-language environment. None of the available languages they inspected (such as Smalltalk, Common Lisp, Eiffel, and Self) quite fitted their bill, so the team created Dylan. It may be named after Dylan Thomas or Bob Dylan, depending on who you talk to. So far, only experimental implementations of language subsets lik e Marlais and Mindy have emerged. But at the time of this writing, Apple is finally about to issue a near-commercial-quality "technology release" of Dylan for the Macintosh. How Does It Feel?

    The Fourth ICFP Programming Contest
Organised by: Damien Doligez Luc Maranget Pierre Weis , INRIA Rocquencourt.
    Results
    The results are now public:
    • First prize: Haskell Carrots with LALR(5000000) , written in Haskell. The judges hereby proclaim that Haskell is the programming tool of choice for discriminating hackers Second prize: Dylan Hackers with Dylan Hackers , written in (guess what?) Dylan. The judges hereby proclaim that Dylan is a fine programming tool for many applications Judges' special prize: Blue Avengers with Erlightning , written in Erlang. The judges hereby proclaim that the Blue Avengers are a group of extremely cool hackers
We also awarded a third and fourth place, although no prize is associated with them. Well, in fact, we awarded two third places, since these two entries are (almost) tied, using the output size criterion.
    • Third place: with runme , written in Objective Caml. Third place: BlobMakers with ElegantBlob , written in C.
The details of the judging process are now available. The tar files of all the submissions are available too.

    Apple Dylan
Apple Cambridge in the early nineties created the Dylan programming language . Dylan combined the power of functional programming languages such as Lisp, the object system from Simula and Smalltalk, and added an infix (Pascal-like) syntax; it was innovative in that it had a macro system that worked with the infix syntax.
(Image from lemonodor . Clicking on an object in one pane shows an aspect of that object, such as contents, callers, or variable references, in any pane that is linked to it.) I was the project lead for the Apple Dylan development environment, which took some of the browsers ideas from Smalltalk but made them configurable . You could create multiple panes, place an object such as a source project, source file, method, or variable in one pane, and link it to other panes, with different link types such as "source for", "contents of", "methods that reference", "methods that write", or "callers". See Paul R. Potts's wiki for screen shots here and here The Dylan Exchange and Functional Objects are still carrying the Dylan torch.
