Prague Morocco The Dutch Language Topic: The Dutch Print This Page E-mail If you aren't Dutch or didn't study Dutch in school, then don't even think of trying to speak it!  You'll be chastised by everyone in Holland.  They frown upon anyone trying to speak Dutch who hasn't got a good handle on it.  It IS a difficult language for most to master.  It's only spoken and understood in a few places around the world, so why learn it?  Most Dutch in the cities speak English very well anyway. If you want to learn the language there are courses available at the Universities, and for many people wanting to live and work in Holland it is essential.  If you're going to be in Holland for an extended stay you can pick up some useful expressions that will serve you in daily transactions, but don't get your hopes up that they'll accept your attempts. I think the reluctance of Dutch people to help others learn the language is no reflection on us visitors, but more on their own attitudes towards their language.  There's a lot of regional variation and dialects.  And there's been an ongoing debate about how the Dutch language should look in it's written form that still hasn't been decided.  Many times I've asked my friends how to pronounce a word, only to hear two completely different versions.  Those in the south of Holland use a softer version of the language with more rounded 'g' sounds.  While up north they use a harder 'g' sound.  And in Friesland they say their language is closer to English than Dutch (not that I can notice).  Most Dutch can't understand the Frieslander's Frysk.

Staying Positive A Positive Song
Bell's Palsy Diary - Dagboek Parese van Bell
Welcome to Rudi's Website
Lectori Salutem,
Since my encounter with Bell's Palsy in August 2000 and publishing my diary on the Internet many people have contacted me. I'm pleased that whatever I experienced appears to be of value to others. Of course it would be best if nobody has to enter the search-string "Bell's palsy", but that's just not the case. It's amazing how many people are confronted with it. Thanks for visiting my website and feel free to explore it, read about my own experience perhaps helping you in one way or another. I feel it is important to emphasize that the diary is a personal account and that there may be a different recovery pattern in each case. Psychologically I counted on a 1 year recovery time. It is something I would do should I ever encounter the similar situation again. Personally I believed that the most important things for me were knowing, accepting and not expecting miracles.
I hope that those of you who are confronted with BP, or people you know, have a speedy recovery just like I did. I realize that my recovery was a speedy one and that others may need a much longer time to recover. Stay positive, also if the development or recovery-pattern stops matching my diary.

Dutch language member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Germanic languages ). Also called Netherlandish, it is spoken by about 15 million inhabitants of the Netherlands, where it is the national language, and by about 300,000 people in the Western Hemisphere. The written and spoken forms of Dutch differ significantly. For example, written Dutch exhibits far greater formality than spoken Dutch in both grammar and vocabulary. One reason for this divergence is that written Dutch evolved from the Flemish dialect spoken in the culturally advanced Flanders and Brabant of the 15th cent., whereas modern spoken Dutch grew out of the vernacular of the province of Holland, which became dominant after the 16th cent. New 'knight' champions Dutch language, culture
(Posted: 11/26/03 Wisconsin Week: November 19, 2003 Barbara Wolff Oostburg, Little Chute, Friesland, Barneveld: The names of towns scattered across Wisconsin bear evidence of Dutch settlement. "However, some of these communities were started up back in the 19th century, and use of the Dutch language has faded out by now. The Dutch usually assimilate very rapidly in this country, and tend not to form permanent Dutch-speaking communities," says R. Byron Bird, emeritus professor of chemical and biological engineering. For just that reason, Bird took it upon himself to champion Dutch language and culture after becoming smitten with the country and its people while on a Fulbright fellowship in Amsterdam in 1950. At UW-Madison alone he assisted in establishing Netherlandic studies, housed in the Department of German; has taught informal Dutch classes for scholars doing research in Holland; has co-authored two elementary Dutch readers for English-speaking people; and has helped to form the UW-Madison Dutch club, a collegial amalgamation of town, gown, students from Holland and English-speakers interested in things Dutch. For these and other efforts to maximize awareness of the Dutch language and culture, Bird recently was "knighted" into the Order of Oranje-Nassau by the consul general of the Netherlands on behalf of Queen Beatrix. "The Dutch do not use the term "Sir,' and have no equivalent for it. Just as well," he notes.
