But linguists are revising their opinion about the condition of the patient. Only fifteen years ago linguists feared Standard Dutch would disappear altogether, to make way for some sort of half English, half Dutch gibberish. And a few years ago so-called Polderdutch, which sounds like the Dutch spoken in the province of Noord-Holland, was seen as the main threat to the Received Pronunciation. Lately linguistic publications have paid a lot of attention to a mix of Dutch and Mediterranean languages, which has been dubbed Murks. Threat The general public may be very concerned about the survival of Standard Dutch; the experts are no longer as worried as they have been before, even not when it comes to Murks. The Volkskrant newspaper was probably the first to coin that phrase.
