MWENDIA, CHARLES WAWERU TANNINS IN TROPICAL LEGUMES: CHARACTERIZATION AND EFFECTS ON RUMINAL BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY (PHENOLICS, SESBANIA SESBANIA, LEUCAENA LEUCOCEPHALA, LUPINUS, BACTERIA) UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH (CANADA) Ten leguminous forages and four browses were collected from four sites in Kenya and tested for polyphenolic content and in vitro degradability by rumen bacteria. Calliandra calothyrsus, Leucaena leucocephala, Rhynchosia usamberensis and Desmodium spp. had the highest total phenolics, casein-precipitable and condensed tannins, Sesbania sesbania and Stylosanthes spp. were intermediate in polyphenolic content while Clitoria ternatea, Centrosema pubescens, Gliricidia sepium, Lupinus spp. and Psilitrichum elliottii were all low in polyphenols. Casein-precipitable tannins constituted 59.7% of total phenolics in stems, 77.1% in leaves and 79.6% in flowers and pods. In vitro dry matter degradability of high tannin C. calothyrus, R usamberensis and Desmodium spp. was between 45 and 55% compared to 72 and 80% for the lower tannin P. elliottii, Lupinus spp. and S. sesban. Digestibility was significantly (p $

Study In Kenya: An Ecological Exploration Tour Kenya, Africa Discover one of the most culturally- and wildlife-rich regions of Africa through this month long study tour. Your hosts will include experienced ecologists and conservation biologists as well as Kenya National Parks personnel and Maasai guides. All are welcome on this tour, whether you are along for interest or for academic credit. Post-secondary institutions of Alberta, Canada are offering the seventh annual Study in Kenya program in May 2004. Students from various institutions have participated in the program, as have non-students who are wanting to see and learn about Africa in greater depth than on a typical safari. The tour is a unique opportunity to study and photograph the wildlife and people of southern Kenya. Visits to National Parks, reserves and group ranches will create a wealth of adventure and learning. Guided walks through the savanna, forests and swamps will reveal the diversity of life. Optional lectures, discussions and participation in reserach projects are provided for all interested participants. The program covers the souther portion of Kenya, and stops at:

AFRICA
AFRICA , the name of a continent representing the largest of the three great southward projections from the main mass of the earth's surface. It includes within its remarkably regular outline an area, according to the most recent computations, of 11,262,000 sq. m., excluding the islands.1 Separated from Europe by the Mediterranean Sea, it is joined to Asia at its N.E. extremity by the Isthmus of Suez, 80 m. wide. From the most northerly point, Ras ben Sakka, a little west of Cape Blanc, in 37 21' N., to the most southerly point, Cape Agulhas, 34 51' 15" S., is a distance approximately of 5000 m.; from Cape Verde, 17 33' 22" W., the westernmost point, to Ras Hafun, 51 27' 52" E., the most easterly projection, is a distance (also approximately) of 4600 m. The length of coast-line is 16,100 m. and the absence of deep indentations of the shore is shown by the fact that Europe, which covers only 3,760,000 sq. m., has a coast-line of 19,800 m. I. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY The main structural lines of the continent show both the east-to-west direction characteristic, at least in the eastern hemisphere, of the more northern parts of the world, and the north-to-south direction seen in the southern peninsulas. Africa is thus composed of two segments at right angles, the northern running from east to west, the southern from north to south, the subordinate lines corresponding in the main to these two directions.
