How Proposition 36 works exactly SANTA CRUZ — While the premise of treating drug offenders rather than jailing them seems simple, implementing the plan requires navigating a complex web of issues. Proposition 36 was passed with the thought that treating people for non-violent and non-dealing drug crimes would ultimately be cheaper than sending them to prison. • vertebrate biologics,
  • microbial targets and
  • enabling glycotechnology.
We have designed the programs and projects so that there are a mix of pure and applied, and long-term and short-term projects.
Program 1: Vertebrate Biologics The objectives of this program are to investigate the role of carbohydrates and associated proteins in:
  • cancer and metastasis
  • autoimmunity and inflammation processes
  • metabolic disorders
The involvement of carbohydrates in each of the above processes has become evident. A significant body of information is now motivating a number of research groups to investigate the intervention in these processes by targeting the relevant carbohydrate recognising protein, whether it be a carbohydrate metabolising enzyme or a carbohydrate adhesion protein. Program 2: Microbial targets The focus of this program is concerned with enzymes and other proteins associated with microorganisms as virulence factors used in pathogenesis.
