Leadership and Support Special projects when sensitive adolescent health issues, such as family problems, drug education, or Elementary School Music Program.
http://www.bpef-online.org/projects.html
The Foundation operates two core programs: Classroom Grants to Teachers and Berkeley School Volunteers along with special projects that provide leadership and support for our schools.
Classroom Grants to Teachers Classroom grants reward teachers who devise energetic, creative ways to teach better. The Foundation's Grants Committee reviews applications submitted by teachers every fall. Grants-this year, more than $163,000-are awarded to teachers at every school in every subject, often funding programs that simply would not otherwise exist. On occasion the Foundation makes other grants to improve our schools. Click here for a complete list of the Foundation's most recent grants. "Foundation grants encourage my teaching to go deeper, individualizing things for each student," says one longtime grant recipient.
Berkeley School Volunteers In 1991 the Foundation launched Berkeley School Volunteers, which this year recruited more than 50,000 hours of volunteer time and talent. Volunteers are recruited from local businesses, community members, and individuals. Activities range from regular classroom tutoring to one-time school gardening and clean-up days or the innovative read-aloud classroom event, "Drop Everything and Read Day." ince 1993, JMI has been involved in numerous projects in both the public and private sector. JMI’s activities are focused on four main areas: (1) technical assistance, (2) education and training, (3) research and evaluation, and (4) information dissemination. Each project that JMI undertakes is staffed with a team of our professional staff and experts from our cadre of consultants.
Examples of recent projects: This project is being conducted for the D.C. Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and has the goal of improving the management of criminal cases from arrest to disposition, thus enabling the better use of resources such as police overtime and jail space. A report is nearing completion. For more information, please contact Barry Mahoney at 303-831-7564 or at bmahoney@jmijustice.org. JMI is facilitating discussions among city officials, businesses, social services, community organizations, and residents regarding the feasibility of enhancing Denver, Colorado s current community court efforts. JMI is assisting a task force in the establishment of a Denver Community Court.
Community courts use a problem-solving approach to address quality-of-life crimes and the related issues. They use the power of the court to create partnerships with non-profit service providers, government agencies and community groups. Community courts also bring defendants charged with low-level crimes to justice in the neighborhood in which the incident occurred. This new and innovative way of dealing with defendants has spread across the country.

Alcohol and Drug Programs - Overview
Mission Statement
We strive to reduce the destructive effects of the use of alcohol and other drugs on individuals, families, and the community at-large. We provide leadership in the development of education/prevention, intervention, recovery and treatment programs, and public policy. Introduction Under the auspices of the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department, Alcohol and Drug Programs is the principal division responsible for the planning, coordination, and delivery of program services. A continuum of care encompassing prevention, intervention and treatment services comprises alcohol and other drug services throughout our community. Additionally, ADP ensures that state, federal and local funding is disbursed for program services throughout Ventura County. To ensure the integrity of its system of care, ADP currently incorporates a model of service delivery encompassing both public and private sector service providers. Along side eight county operated centers, ADP contracts with more than 20 private providers to deliver services spanning a continuum of care encompassing prevention, treatment and intervention services. The success of its delivery model hinges on the active coordination, collaboration and planning of services undertaken by the Department over the course of many years.

THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE OF DRUG CONTROL AND CRIME PREVENTION (ODCCP) PROGRAMS
The Vienna International Center is home to the main United Nations organization dealing with international narcotics and criminal activities on a worldwide basis. UNVIE represents the United States at the UN Office of Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP), which is the umbrella organization of the UN International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) and the Center for International Crime Prevention (CICP). ODCCP’s work complements the U.S.’s own efforts to control international trafficking in narcotics, combat transnational organized crime and curb the financing of international terrorism. Since September 11, ODCCP has taken on the role of implementing the 12 international terrorism conventions as well as playing a key role in the implementation of counter narcotics projects in Afghanistan. Increased attention has been given to the connection between organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism. The U.S. supports ODCCP’s global program against money laundering, providing technical assistance and mentoring to states so that they are better able to trace and seize illicit funds, as well as track criminals, traffickers and terrorists. Drug abuse and organized crime are global problems affecting all countries and all levels of society. The results are damaged health and productivity and social breakdown. A critical phenomenon is the pervasive corruption caused by this 500 billion dollar-a-year drug business a sizable part of the world "economy." The deterioration of the rule of law and social cohesion can affect every facet of a country’s economic and political life. ODCCP programs are targeted at preventing money laundering, corruption, trafficking in persons, interdicting illegal sales of drugs, reducing drug demand, promoting police and military cooperation, and curbing narcotics activities used to finance terrorism. U.S. cooperation with ODCCP complements America’s national strategy to combat drug abuse, corruption and organized crime.

Implementing the Medicare Prescription Drug Program
before the
Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, The Federal Workforce, and The District of Columbia
April 8, 2004
The MMA represents a fundamental change in the Medicare program by offering our beneficiaries more choices in how they receive their care and by establishing a responsive relationship with the providers of that care. This will begin with the Medicare sponsored drug discount card, and will continue as the full prescription drug benefit is implemented in 2006, and represents a lasting change in how CMS and the Medicare program will operate. Whether it is in how we reduce Medicare overpayments or how we improve quality of care, our fundamental goal is to offer our beneficiaries choices of high quality health care, while being more responsive and flexible in how we interact with the health care providers who deliver the services. CMS STRUCTURE The CMS accomplishes its mission by working with, and through, others. The Agency employs approximately 4,500 people in locations around the country. However, these employees are only a small portion of a large, complex network of people and groups that make our programs work successfully. Some of the many others CMS works with, and through, include:

School failure, theft, violence, and unsafe sex are also linked to underage drug use, yet teen perceptions about the risks of using drugs are often woefully out of touch with reality.
To addresses these societal concerns, AED is working on the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, the largest anti-drug initiative ever funded by the government.
