Poison Prevention Tips
The Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center offers the following tips which should be followed daily to prevent poisoning. For additional information on preventing poisonings in the home, please see our new Safety House
  • All medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, should have child-proof caps and be kept out of reach of children. If possible, put a lock or safety latch on your medicine cabinet.
  • Prescription medications aren't the only thing in your bathroom that can be harmful to your children. Hair and skin products can also be dangerous if swallowed or inhaled. Keep them out of small children's reach.
  • The medicine cabinet isn't the only place children find drugs. Many kids get them from their mother's purses. If you carry medications in your purse, make sure they have child-resistant closures.
  • Never transfer prescription medications to other containers. You may forget what they are and the prescribed dosage. Keep all prescription medicines in original containers.

Pharmaceutical Diversion Education is designed to assist a wide range of the population in understanding the potential abuse and addiction that can be associated with prescription medication. Year after year, Drug Enforcement Administration statistics indicate that pharmaceuticals are almost 30% of the overall drug problem in the United States, running a close second only to cocaine abuse. However, until recently, law enforcement, health care professionals, and the general public have placed little emphasis on this huge problem. Pharmaceutical Diversion Education (PDE) can offer extensive education in the area of prescription drug abuse. PDE offers training for health care professionals and their staff, law enforcement, and anyone responsible for reducing the incidents of drug abuse in the workplace. Private consulting work is also available in these same areas. PDE not only offers education on the problems of prescription drug abuse, but can help you identify the problems, and formulate prevention programs. Globally, sex between men and women is by far the most common way of passing on HIV. But a second transmission route drives the epidemic in many, if not most, countries outside Africa. That is transmission among men and women who inject drugs. Injection of any sort is an even more efficient way of spreading HIV than sexual intercourse. Since injecting drug users are often linked in tight networks and commonly share injecting equipment with other people without cleaning it, HIV can spread very rapidly in these populations. Also, like other sexually active people, people who inject drugs may acquire HIV infection through their sexual partners if they have unprotected sex. In the USA, it is estimated that 9 out of 10 cases of heterosexual transmission of HIV in New York City are related to sex with a drug user. In some places, including much of China and parts of India and Myanmar, more women are infected through sex with drug users than any other way. Injecting drug use also contributes to mother-to-child transmission of HIV. In Uruguay, 40% of babies with HIV are born to mothers who inject drugs. How many people are injecting drug users?
