THE SEEDS OF VIOLENCE ARE SOWN AT HOME
"If 20 million people were infected by a virus that caused anxiety, impulsivity, aggression, sleep problems, depression, respiratory and heart problems, vulnerability to substance abuse, antisocial and criminal behavior, retardation and school failure, we would consider it an urgent public health crisis. Yet, in the United States alone, there are more than 20 million abused, neglected and traumatized children vulnerable to these problems. Our society has yet to recognize this epidemic, let alone develop an immunization strategy." - Bruce D. Perry MD, PhD., CIVITAS: Childhood Trauma Programs http://www.childtrauma.org

Welcome to the Saginaw ISD website for the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Comprehensive School Health Education Consortium. History
Every weekday, more than 50 million young people and 4 million teachers attend 125,000+ schools across our nation. Because of the size and accessibility of this population, school health programs are one of the most efficient means of shaping our nation's future health, education and social well-being. Safe and Drug Free Schools and Community Act
The Safe and Drug-free Schools and Communities Act (as part of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act) supports programs to prevent violence in and around schools; to prevent the illegal use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco by young people; and to foster a safe and drug-free learning environment that supports academic achievement. Students and school personnel need a secure environment, free from the dangers of violence, drug use and lack of discipline, in order to ensure that all children achieve their full potential.2 List of Michigan Model Training Dates - Click and Search PD Calendar.

Extension professionals in many states, recognizing they have a contribution to make in the war against drugs, have identified drug education as a high priority. Illinois Cooperative Extension's drug educational program is broad-based and believes "...the most promising approaches to drug prevention are comprehensive programs that involve schools, communities, parents, students, and law enforcement...."1 A Broader Perspective Illinois Extension's approach to drug education reflects the view that the drug problem involves far more than the abuse of illegal substances such as "crack" or heroin. It also includes the misuse of medicinal drugs which, according to Goodstadt,2 is our most widespread and serious drug problem. Though both categories of drugs are potentially dangerous, one group consists of illegal substances while the other is made up of drugs with legitimate therapeutic applications. Programs that broadly address the drug problem, including the misuse of legally obtained medicinal drugs and abuse of illegal street drugs, should distinguish between the concepts of abuse and misuse. Drug abuse is the intentional and nontherapeutic use of any psychoactive (mind-affecting) substance, including alcohol, that adversely affects the user's well-being. Drug misuse is inappropriately prescribing or using therapeutic drugs, is unintentional, and those involved aren't seeking psychoactive effects.

T hirty sixth-graders begin to shout as a police officer enters their classroom at P.S. 20 on the Lower East Side. "Good morning, Officer Carla!" they call out to their favorite teacher. Officer Carla is Carla DeBlasio, 35, a one-time transit cop who teaches weekly classes as part of the NYPD's Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, known as DARE. On a recent Wednesday, the officer strides into the classroom clutching DARE's mascot, a fuzzy stuffed lion named Daren. Officer Carla wears a DARE pin above her police badge and a gun tucked discreetly inside the waistband of her navy blue slacks. But she seems more like a dedicated teacher than a typical cop. Indeed, she knows every student's name, and when she discovered that P.S. 20 did not have a basketball team, she started her own. Such devotion has made Officer Carla a star in the city's DARE program. At first, the students fired the usual questions at her. "Have you ever used your gun?" "Have you ever shot anybody?" But now, near the end of DARE's 17-week curriculum, any anxiety the students may have had about cops, or at least Officer Carla, seems to have dissipated. Officer Carla begins by recapping last week's lesson on "positive alternatives." "What happens when we hang out with the wrong people?" she yells. Tiny hands shoot into the air as students holler the answers.
