Connie's Story
By Connie Lewis
About the same time we were talking about this DDPAC had some grant money to help people with disabilities. DDPAC is the Developmental Disabilities Planning and Advisory Council. DDPAC gives money to People First of Montana to pay the advisors and they give money to the People First members to go to the DD Conference every year. People First voted to write a grant to teach us driving. We needed the grant money to help pay for us to have the skills to teach us. I and two other members had to help write the grant to tell people how having a drivers licence would change our lives. DDPAC liked our proposal and gave us more then $16,000.00 for drivers education project. So the Missoula People First got to do this. The first thing that we needed was someone to teach us a drivers education course. We found Ken Walt, a retired teacher. He met with some of us and we told him that we wanted to learn how to drive. He agreed to teach the drivers education course. I was one of the first people to sign up. The first day of class we told a little about ourselves. He gave us folders, high lighters, pens, pads, and drivers ed books to hand out to us. We were also given the Montana State Drivers Manual. We went through the book first and there were movies we had to watch on safety. We answered the questions the teacher had when he called on us. We went through the drivers ed manual answering those questions and highlighted the things that were the most important. The classes lasted Ten weeks. I studied at home also.

It's the Bible ! Whether you are a student of motorsport, or just interested in fast driving, this is quite simply THE reference book. It's the original, and the best. Many will find DSJ's style somewhat dry and almost academic. Don't expect any laughs. But there is SO much valuable information packed into such a short volume, that it's solid value - no waffle ! From driver psychology (Jenks was first to coin the term "10/10ths") to vehicle dynamics at speed, all the essential knowledge is in here. No race or rally driver worth his salt should ever step into the cockpit before reading this book. Excellent book, teaching all aspects of high speed driving This is an excellent book for learning the "finer" points of high speed driving. The techniques and approach to the subject apply to both racing and street driving. This is a great book to read first if you want to learn to drive better, or if you wish to read more about the subject, it is a great base to start from.

Teenage Drivers Teach Your Children Well
By Manny M. Moncivais, Driving Institute of America Learn More Webster's defines attitude as "a manner that shows one's disposition." and then defines disposition as "one's nature or temperament." A proper attitude by both the parent (or guardian) and the teen driver will benefit a teen driver during the "Critical 1st phase of driving" the first five years. Let's look at desirable attitudes and how to achieve them. As the parent, you may be pondering: How will I train my teen driver? Where will I train my teen driver? Do I have the proper skills to train my teen? Driver's Education training is only a small percent of what your teen actually needs, therefore it is recommended that you secure a professional driver trainer for further improvement and practice of your teen's driving skills or obtain a "parent training packet" which some states are providing for parents and guardians. An attitude acknowledging the need for professional help either by hiring a professional trainer or acquiring a "parent training package" and applying its principles yourself will put a positive spin on driver training for your teen. Another positive attitude you can exhibit is patience. Patience will be much appreciated by your teen during the initial training sessions. Not being patient during your driving sessions with your teen can stress out your teen and potentially cause an accident. Try putting yourself in your teen's shoes, and have a very patient attitude.
