March 10, 2004 VermontHomeschoolers versus Drivers Education Teachers Dear HSLDA members and friends: House Bill 560 will be heard in the House Transportation Committee soon. Homeschoolers have done a wonderful job of persuading legislators to let parents teach their own children how to drive. Nobody cares more about a child's safety than his own father or mother! Unfortunately, the union of driver education teachers opposes this bill. We need your help to pass the bill in the Transportation Committee. Action Requested: 1. Please contact every member of the House Transportation Committee and urge them to vote "yes" on H.B. 560. Say, "No one cares more about a child's safety than his own mother and father. Say yes to

More and more, states are teaching students in drivers education classes how they can become organ and tissue donors. "You don't have any use of these things when you die, so why not?" Robin Gary, a drivers education teacher, told a class at Amelia County High School, about 40 miles west of Richmond. Gary told the sophomores that 11 people die each day waiting for transplants and asked the girls to imagine a loved one who needed an organ. Then, she said, "Imagine you know there was someone out there who could be a donor and wasn't." Drivers ed used as vehicle to teach about organ donation
Associated Press AMELIA, VA.It used to be that learning to drive meant mastering the clutch, the high-speed freeway merge and the art of parallel parking. But some teenagers earning their wheels are facing another kind of lesson: what their death could mean for others. More and more, states are teaching about organ donation in drivers education classes, in hopes that young drivers will choose to become organ and tissue donors. "You don't have any use of these things when you die, so why not?" Robin Gary, a drivers education teacher, told a class of 10th-grade girls at Amelia County High School, about 40 miles west of Richmond. She told students that up to 11 people die each day waiting for transplants, and asked them to imagine a loved one in that situation. Then, she said, "Imagine you know there was someone out there who could be a donor and wasn't." Teaching about organ donation, in drivers education and other classes, so far has come on a state-by-state basis. But the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently allocated $24.8 million annually in part to establish a national curriculum for school districts that choose to teach about donation.

PHILOSOPHY We believe that Drivers Education should educate our students to be good drivers. As good drivers our students need to be informed about and accept the responsibilities associated with safe driving. Therefore, we must teach our students what safe driving is and what the legal and social responsibilities of a safe driver are. DISTRICT/PROGRAM GOALS Students will be able to demonstrate:
  • safety practices in the use of automobiles; the ability to analyze energy and economic conditions related to automobiles; minimum performance capabilities for entry into the highway traffic safety system as vehicle operators; an awareness of the various careers in highway transportation; an understanding of state laws and statutes pertaining to driver certification and practices;
  • If a drivers education program is provided by the district, the program will be made available to all eligible resident students. The district may charge a tuition rate as established by the Board.

    WHAT IS DRIVERS’ EDUCATION? If you are reading this article on our website, you have probably had your curiosity tweaked by references from friends or something on the news. If you are like I was, you probably don’t really know what Driver's Education (DE) means, but you’re too embarrassed to ask anyone! Well, relax: this article is for you, and it should answer most of your questions. Let me start by quoting our past President, Peter Kendig about Drivers Ed: “It’s the most fun you’ll ever have in an upright position.” We normally use the full race course (1.6 miles) for our DE’s. This is not a race school. We teach driving techniques that make you a better and safer driver on the highway, and you get to learn just how great Porsches really are! What are the requirements to participate? Coastal; Bend Region would like or any license driver 18 years or older to participate. Our region requires that each participant use a helmet with a Snell rating of either SA95 or a M95. We do have loaner helmets if you don't own your own.

    It's a rite of passage. It's something teens anxiously wait for, and parents dread. It's getting your first drivers license. Three men have also made it their mission to keep these young drivers, and everyone else on the road, safe. These are drivers education teachers. Don Campbell, Bob Muth and David Walker have spent the month of June educating and advising 72 teens on driving techniques in Yankton's drivers education course. After two weeks of classroom studies, the students and their teachers were ready to get behind the wheel. The last driving sessions were completed Wednesday.
    Photo by Kellie Smedsrud The reasoning behind taking on a task as big as drivers education varies from educator to educator, but all three Yankton teachers agreed that they enjoy working with the kids.

    Driver Education Program
    What is a Driver Education Program? A driver education program is designed to teach new drivers fundamental skills and basic knowledge about driving a motor vehicle. All driver education programs are required to use Department of Motor Vehicle Safety-approved standardized curriculum with Department of Motor Vehicle Safety licensed instructors. The program consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Young drivers may qualify for a driver's license, but they're still learning to drive. They tend to overestimate their abilities behind the wheel. And, as we all know in Georgia, speed limits fluctuate, traffic gets heavy, and rain and snow are hazards. Scare tactics and lectures do not work with young drivers, but supervising their practice driving over a longer learning period does. This is where parents play a critical role. Driver education is only designed to teach fundamental skills and knowledge. Parents, guardians, and "supervising" drivers must do the rest.
