A look at 500 years of figure drawing By Maria Esposito and John Christian 17 April 2000 Use this version to print The drawings were grouped in eight themes: Ideal Bodies, Anatomies, The Christian body, Drawn from Life, The Gaze and the Mask, Drapery and Display, Intimacy and Disfiguration. It is debatable whether this kind of arrangement is entirely successful. Perhaps the material could be better studied if placed in chronological order. In any case, the exhibition, which provided the opportunity to study drawings by some of humanity's greatest artists, was an exhilarating experience. Centuries later, perhaps the best explanation of the power and emotional intensity of drawing was provided by the painter Max Klinger (1857-1920). In his 1891 book, Drawing and Painting , Klinger compared drawing to piano music and poetry.

drawing, Art, General
Related Category: Art, General drawing, art of the draftsman. In its broadest sense it includes every use of the delineated line and is thus basic to the arts of painting, architecture, sculpture, calligraphy, and geometry. The word drawing is commonly used to denote works in pen, pencil, crayon, chalk, charcoal, or similar media in which form rather than color is emphasized. For centuries drawings have been made either as preparatory studies (see cartoon ) or as finished works of art. Preparatory drawings sometimes reveal a vigor and spontaneity lacking in the completed work. Among the many artists acclaimed for their drawings are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, DUrer, Rubens, Hogarth, Goya, Daumier, Klee, Picasso, and Matisse. Drawings are often used as illustrations and are reproduced by such processes as etching engraving , and lithography See H. Hutter

Drawing
When most people think about pen and ink drawings, images of black lines on white paper usually come to mind. But pen and ink has advanced far beyond these confines, as today's pens, papers, brushes, and multicolored inks and pigments make almost any type of illustration possible. Most ink pens use a metallic nib, of which there are many versions available (according to the kinds of lines desired). Traditional crow quill pens are typically dipped into ink to load their small reservoirs with enough ink for only a few strokes. These pens have steel tips that are available in a range of sizes. For versatility, they are also interchangeable on a wooden or plastic holder. These types of pens clean up easily but have limited stroke direction and a tendency to splatter and drip. Technical pens are commonly used to draw fine, controlled lines of various thickness. These pens consist of a hollow nib, a self-contained ink supply, and a plastic holder. Within the nib is a thin wire that helps regulate the flow of ink from the tip. By using technical pens with various nib aperture widths, line widths from very fine (.13 mm) to wide (2mm) can be consistently produced. Other pens such as fountain, bamboo, and reed are also used for a specific variety of line appearance. Each type has its own characteristics and limitations, so it is best to try them all and check the results for yourself.

Title - Blind Contour Line Drawing
By - Stephanie Slatner
Primary Subject - Art
Grade Level - K-12
When making a blind contour drawing, the eye is not watching the hand as it draws on the paper. Contour drawing is an excellent way to train the eye to draw what it really sees rather than what it thinks it sees. The first contour drawings you do will look, well, funny. However, with practice, you will find that you will be able to accurately record an image on paper without looking at your hand as it draws! It's a great warm-up drawing activity for any age group.
What You Need:
  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Everyday Objects (shoes, plants, desks, pencils etc.)
What You Do:
  • Choose an object to draw (a door, a book, shoes, window, plant etc.).
  • Pick a point on the object where the eye can begin its slow journey around the contour or edge of the object. Remember, the eye is like a snail, barely crawling as it begins its journey.
