Object of this assignment is to create a self portrait from an atypical view. Consider whether you would like an extreme closeup, a regular vantage point, pieces of yourself throughout the page, objects that identify you (instead of rendering your actual face), to be suggested in appearance, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Use the various collage material to help build textures or represent certain things. Intermix drawing with collage as we are doing in Assignment 11. This would be a great chance to introduce spatial vs. flat space. This drawing should incorporate all considerations of composition and should not only be about you. Look at artists such as Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Willem de Kooning, Kathe Kollowitz, Romare Bearden and many others.
Seeing that it is for extra credit, just doing it is not adequate. There must be an effort as well as devotion of time and concentration exhibited in the work in order to receive the credit.

Perspective Drawing
Discussion
If you look along a straight road, the parallel sides of the road appear meet at a point in the distance. This point is called the vanishing point and has been used to add realism to art since the 1400's in Florence, Italy (via city.net) Suppose you want to draw a railroad track that vanishes into the distance. The rays from the points a given distance from the eye along the lines of the tracks are projected to the eye. The angle formed by these rays decreases with increasing distance from the eye. The picture below shows an overhead view of an observer (camera or eye) looking down the the track. The next picture shows a side view. The observer's eye or camera is above the ground. Draw these pictures on graph paper and try to figure out where the points would fall on the plane of the drawing. Can you draw the railroad track? Solution To draw in perspective, draw a horizon line and draw a vanishing point anywhere on the horizon. Lines which are parallel in real life are drawn to intersect at the vanishing point. Distant figures appear smaller but have the same shape and proportions as they would close up. In geometry, we would say that the figures are similar.

I have never painted before - how do you recommend that I start?

First, I would recommend that you draw for at least a couple of months before you attempt painting. I have four drawing exercises on this site - Contour Mass Gesture , and Mechanics of Drawing - that are good for beginners. If you plan to paint occasionally as a hobby, I would suggest using canvas panels or pre-stretched and pre-primed canvases to start with, rather than stretching your own canvases. These are sold in art supply stores, some office supply stores, or on the Web at www.utrechtart.com

Materials Needed

Note: Art materials can be bought online, at www.utrechtart.com and www.dickblick.com.
Sketch pad
- You can start small, if you wish, at around 5 or 6 inches by 8 or 9 inches. These are good for carrying around with you, in case of a drawing emergency. If you feel comfortable with a larger size, go for it. At this point, you don't need a high grade of paper. The idea is to do lots and lots of sketches, and for this newsprint pads or a sketch pad are cheap and work fine. If money is not an issue, a heavier weight drawing paper, like Strathmore, or even a hardbound drawing book is great. An art supply or office supply store will have these materials.
Drawing tool - A soft pencil is good, preferably a 2B or 3B drawing pencil. You can also try a felt tip pen or even a ballpoint pen, just to get a different feel. These can all be found at an art supply store, some office supply stores.
Kneaded eraser - These are sold in art supply stores, or some office supply stores. A small to medium size is good, unless you are working on large paper. These can be kneaded after use, to get a cleaner surface to erase with. These only erase pencil marks, not felt tip or ballpoint. There are erasers made for these pens - look in an art or office supply store.

Lesson Plans Art One Eyed Drawing One Eyed Drawing:
With patience and practice anyone can draw well enough to surprise themselves. A tip for students who complain that "it doesn't look right" is to close one eye while looking at the subject they are drawing. One problem we have is that we are trying to convert three dimensions (as seen by our two eyes) into only two dimensions on paper. Closing one eye flattens the depth of field, thus approximating the two dimensional world of drawing.

Lesson Plans Art The 15 Second Drawing The 15 Second Drawing:
Need a quick filler before the bell rings? Have your kids grab a sheet of paper (scratch paper will be great) and a pencil. Then strike a pose, and give them 15 or 30 seconds to draw you. If you emphasize that you want to see complete figures, you eliminate their trying to draw an outline, which would be impossible in 15 seconds anyway. Strive for capturing the essence of movement, the angle of the body and the elimination of detail. This will help students to really "see" what is in front of them, and, I think, translates obliquely into better observation and communication skills.
